SMS sets: a poor value

I read that the '65-'67 Special Mint Sets cost $4 when new. Today they are worth about $10, which is right at $1.32 in 1965 dollars. If you had bought them when they were new hoping they would be worth a lot of money in the future, you would be highly disappointed. I just found it interesting.

That is true of nearly all mint products from 1960 to date, especially if you ignore increases only due to PM content, (you could have bought a lot more pm at the same time by purchasing junk silver or gold). Yeah, there are a few good purchases over this 54 year period, but 98% of them lost money, many of them a LOT of money when calculating inflation.

So, moral of the story? Collect coins for hobby, not profit. If you like US Mint issues and wish to buy them straight from the mint, great. I am happy for you. Just don't expect risk your retirement account on these purchases.

I would not go big on any coin set proof or SMS if your looking to make money.Unless you find a collection before a dealer or old buddy stash.

The $4 I used to purchase the set back in 1965 would be roughly the equivalent of $30 in present day currency. Not much of an investment, was it? Good thing I'm a collector and not an investor.........:)

You will find this is true of the vast majority of mint products over the last 50 years or so. They just didn't hold their value. This is why we collect for the joy of it...not to make money.

That's the reason I collect. I doubt I have anything worth more than $30 except for an ASE which might be worth $35. Most of my coins are circulated.

It's not sad if you are buying these coins today. It beats spending $30, which is what the SMS would be worth if they held their value. You can buy the entire 3 year run for thirty bucks.

Just because it isn't a 67 or DC doesn't mean it isn't a Cameo Jello.

Cameo's can still be found in SMS Sets but you have to "extend" yourself by buying sets still sealed in original shipping boxes.

I have found Cameo's in opened packages. Deep Cameo is however much more a trick. I think I have two borderline ones. (see my avatar for one) plus its Accented Hair!
