Hey, a day or two ago I posted an IHC that was found in change at Wal-mart. I also mentioned that I had found a 1917 a couple years back. Anyway... I have decieded that they are both going back to wence thay came...circulation. I've got a bunch of errands to run this afternoon so, I'm going to throw them in my pocket with my other change and spend them both today. I don't know where, but by 6:00 tonight there will be an 1896 IHC and an 1917-s lincoln back in the mix.

They came, they visited, they provided a moment of fun and surprise. Who am I to keep all these cool feelings for myself? So I figure I'll pay it forward and hopefully some young or old collector will come across them and get that same brief burst of joy and exilliration I got from them.

I'll post later and let you know how and where they went.

It is really cool what you are doing but I must highly recommend against it. I can't tell you how often I find pennies on the ground at work that have been knicked to bits by cars and even just thrown away in the trash! I have even found a couple wheats that I found too late and were run over. What I recommend is donating them to a local coin club's "youth" bin or putting them both in 2x2s and giving them to a relative of yours to perhaps try and get them involved in collecting. Just my belief on the matter. -NOS

Back to circulation or donating to youth group - both great suggestions and either will bring someone a BIG smile as they did you... The coins have survived roughly 90 to 100+ years of circulation and show that they have passed through a few hands in their times and survived. Your money, enjoy spending it as I'm sure there will be a big smile on your face when you hand it off. The unsuspecting recipient will probably have no clue which makes it that much more fun. It's like handing someone a small piece of gold without them even realizing what they have been given.

I like to place old coins back into circulation, nothing rare or expensive, just maybe a few Buffalo nickels or Mercury dimes once in a while a dateless SLQ. If doing that is enough to get one person, adult or child, interested in the hobby then thats enough to make me happy. Theres absolutely nothing wrong with thinking that we're doing some good for our hobby.

That is a great thing you are doing. Circulating some older coins is a great way to share the hobby with others. I used to work in a Wal-Mart Photo Center and would mix in a few wheaties or dateless buffalo nickels with the coins in the drawer from time to time so that some customers received pleasant surprises.

Reminds me of the time I put three buffalo nickels, a mercury dime, a standing liberty quarter,
and assorted war-era nickels into the collection box at a church.

    Just a update here:

The Indian Head was placed back into circulation at @ 3:15 pm at Mast General Store in Greenville SC. The reason I spent it here is because the store has been open since 1883 and I figured it was an appropiate place. Who knows maybe it was there before. I used it to help buy some old fashion red licorice whips for me and my son to snack on.(this place has old wood barrels filled with every kind of candy you can't find anymore!) I figured this was also appropiate, I'm guessing that sometime in its long life it must of bought some kid some penny candy, so what better way to use than to buy another kid a hundred years later some also. Even tho it was worn and beat up I did try to give the little Indian the respect it deserves.
The cashier didn't notice a thing.

The 1917-s was spent at Wilsons 5&10 in Greer SC at @4:30.I always see lots of kids there so I figured it was as good as place as any. It wasn't spent on anything paticular just included it with my payment.
Once again the cashier didn't notice anything.

I have to say that I now know what it means to feel as "giddy as a school girl". I honestly can't say if it was more of a thrill to find them or to put them back. I felt like a spy on a secret mission to deliver some highly sought after lost treasure. You guys should try it, it really was a rush.

    TO USS656--
Yeah, you couldn't chisel the smile off my face as I was walking away from the cashiers.

Now where's that war nickel I got awhile back??

    Good job.

Whenever I need stamps, I stop at the Post Office and use the machine and get back dollar coins in change - either susies or saqs. I spend them with absolute delight here there and everywhere. The clerks always have to look at them, but at least most of them realize there is a dollar coin in these United States . . . I've only had to explain a couple of times.

    Again, good job,

    Good for you!!! :thumb:

It's a great story with a happy ending for you and happy beginning for some unsuspecting customer.

Mattman, that's fantastic! What a great story... Now, I wonder how long they will remain in circulation until someone catches them. Who knows where they might end up? Wouldn't it be funny if one or both happen to land right back in your hands in a few days?

Well, that is a wonderful story. Great way to start my day !

A simple act of selflessness and generosity... thinking of the next guy and not one's self.

I'm sure many will be inspired to do the same thing. Maybe the next one is me !

In fact, that's how I got started in coin collecting - getting an unusual coin in pocket change. As a kid, I had a garage sale and got a mercury dime. That was back in the mid 60's, when silver was still circulating freely.

Again... thanks for the good example !
