No HD, you were right the first time: Wikipedia Mount Pelée eruption On May 8, 1902, a blast from the volcano Mont Pelée destroyed the town of St. Pierre, killing almost all of its 29,000 inhabitants. The only survivors were a shoemaker and a prisoner who was saved by his position in a jail dungeon with only a single window. Because Saint Pierre was the commercial capital of the island, there were four banks in the city—the Banque de la Martinique, Banque Transatlantique, a branch of the Colonial Bank of London, and the Crédit Foncier Colonial. All were destroyed. The town had to be completely rebuilt and lost its status as the commercial capital, a title which shifted to Fort-de-France This little tid bit of info used to show up on the History Channel in the 90's as a bumper between episodes or commercial breaks. Hosted/Narrated by Sam Waterston.
really nice coins eugene, you guys are giving me really itchy fingers to start again..................................
That's interesting. One of many examples from history showing the dangers of building a town next to a "dormant" volcano.
Thanks There are 2.87 ounces of silver in the set. I purchased it on September 4, 2010 & paid the ASW x the spot price. Silver was about $20 an ounce back then & it is something like $27.50 an ounce today. The photo was taken in my office where the carpet is dark gray & the wallpaper is light gray. My shirt in the photo is white.
