Kinda funny, for I usually only try to pick one coin from each ruler, but I now have "9" Antoninus Pius examples!! (seven of 'em from Alexandria) ... huh, apparently I think he makes cool coins?!! => anyway, I absolutely loved this baby when I saw it ... sure, it may be a bit soft here and there, but overall it's a sweet lookin' coin with cozy eye-appeal (I hope that you dudes/dudess like it too) Cheers EGYPT Alexandria Antoninus Pius BI Tetradrachm 138-161 AD Dated RY 5 (AD 141/2) Diameter: 23 mm Weight: 13.39 grams Obverse: Laureate head right Reverse: Poseidon standing right, foot on prow, holding trident and dolphin; date across field Reference: Dattari 2339 => oh, and because it is one of my threads, please feel free to post whatever you want (ideally, it may have something to do with ancient coins, but hey, not too many rules in my threads) ... I am eager to see your coins and hear your thoughts, my coin-friends
Nice one stevex. It's seen some good circulation and still has nice detail. Here's a Claudius II with Poseidon/Neptune and dolphin rev. It's still kinda dusty. I haven't cleaned it.
My Poseidonia stater is not what I really want to show. I know a dealer who has an early one I'd really like but it is $1200 and I'm not ready. His isn't this nice: http://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=847810 Below is low grade but larger (tetradrachm) of Demetrios Poliorketes. In high grade these high relief silvers are expensive.
that is a great reverse stevex, poseiden has the ol' ding dong in the breeze and a dolphin in hand. must be nice to be a god. I always like th Alexandrian coins. I don't have a poseiden...it's on my list. ...and I only have this AP...
Excellent pickup my coin-friend! I actually thought at first glance that that prow was a poor little crocodile being stomped on by Poseidon
Very nice, Steve! A type I'd like to have. Here are my two A-Pi Alexandrian tets. EGYPT, Alexandria. Neat addition! Chubby dolphin on a chubby Tet. I just posted this one but this seems like a good excuse to share my A-Pi B Tet again...
Hey, thanks for the great coin-compliments and "wow" I love seeing your A-Pius examples (all of them are very cool) ... thanks for the participation, gang!! Man, I don't know what I should start posting first? ... this coin reverse opens-up soooo many options!! (dolphin coins, prow coins, neptune coins, Alexandrian coins, A-Pius coins ... ) Well, I think I'll start by keeping my OCD in check and I'll post the rest of my A-Pius coins (just to keep them all together, ya know?) Hmmm => my new example is my only AR silver example (well, BI Tet ... "almost" like silver)
Lotsa great coins, but the thread just didn't seem to be living up to its name without Shelley Winters
Ahaha => good one, Z ... Yah, I was only 9 years old when my sister agreed to take my friends and I to see this 1972 classic disaster flick ... Jaws (1975) was another classic from this period of disaster movies (The Towering Inferno and Earthquake were also a couple of other cheesy disaster films that I was somehow allowed to watch, both from 1974) ... good times
Man, those cheesy disaster films were all great. A little before my cinema-going years, but my folks had a nice VHS collection. We was hi-tech back then!
yah, but man => the ultimate cheesy movie series from this time period is definitely "The Planet of the Apes Series" (those stinkin' apes!!) Planet of the Apes (1968) Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970) Escape from the Planet of the Apes (1971) Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) and Battle for the Planet of the Apes (1973) ... God bless 'em (good times!!)
