    Looks like an optical scanning effect from the plastic holder he's using and the scanner. Something about the bottom is causing the scan light to refract and create the distortion you are seeing. Reverse is correct, and the different sizes of the images of the obverse and reverse pretty much confirm this.

    Carnival funhouse mirror effect...
