I sent in an 1838 Reeded edge capped bust half dollar for grading and variety, unaware that they did not attribute them by GREG number. Then I got this email today... Hello I am emailing in regards to your PCGS Submission# 5074272, as it currently stands we do not recognize the GR die variety numbers for Reeded Edge Halves. I have pushed for it for a while and finally got the higher-ups to recognize them. I will be adding the numbers into our system this weekend and have it attributed ASAP. I just wanted to give you a heads up, you will have the first Reeded Edge Half Dollar variety from PCGS. Hopefully your order will be ready to ship early next week. Thank you, Steven Poliquin PCGS Grading Room
That's pretty huge, Congratulations! Are you going to add a premium on that coin and sell it as a "1st", or keep it as a numismatic trophy? ....I would do the latter! How many times do you get to own a coin that represents a change in TPG policy?
That's the thing... I have no idea. It looks like the JR-11 by the old identification standard, but the new GR book doesn't list a number that corresponds with the JR-11. I'm curious what they'll do about that.
Here is the coin (seller's pics, not mine). Believe it or not, I bought this coin in an ANACS AU53 holder... (I know... WHAT?!?!?) I thought it was an MS62 or 63, but I was told today by PCGS that it is currently in an AU58 holder, though it has yet to be finalized.
I've heard several mods and CT users try to explain that there are plenty of choice coins out there in ICG and ANACS holders if you just look. Well.... case in point.
It's true...you need to know what to look for. This case is certainly and example of that. This is certainly not the norm for ANACS.
That's great their identifying the gr die varieties now. I've bought some very good coins in anacs slabs Just sent a I feel slightly undergraded cc seated quarter was au-53 I feel it may come back from pcgs at 55
That's good of PCGS to email you and let you know what's going on with your submission and that the variety will be attributed. Nice half too!
