Sent a few coins in for grading including this 1894 Morgan.

3rd lowest proof Morgan for the entire series from NGC, only a Good 1895 and a Very Good 1895 lower. Hope someone needs it for a lowball set. :woot:

What made you decide to grade it? I would be surprised for sure.

I sent it in with a few other semi-keys to be graded. I was expecting a F/VF grade.

    But certainly not a Proof?

I'm sure the experts can tell but what gives it away? The dies used I would imagine.

There are only three VAM's for 1894. I believe this coin lacks the doubling on the reverse all circulation strikes for the date have.

Wow, never thought a proof can go that low.
I'd buy just for the case. :)

That's a neat surprise I've seen circulated proof before but I wouldn't have recognized this as one

Congrats on your sweet surprise! Were you worried it wasn't gonna get a grade?

Is it a pleasant surprise though? Seems like the business strike version would be worth more in Fine

I was certainly pleasantly surprised. It is a unique coin, I think it would have a premium over a F-15 business strike.

Someone there must really know their stuff to even think of looking at it in that way.

I wonder what they saw that they immediately said proof coin...?

    Maybe the crisp denticles?

I think it might be the squared rim by the E and opposite the chin. Just my opinion.
