eBay's MC999 Suspicious buyer for item Message

I'm sure some of you old time eBay sellers have received this message before. Well I got my first one today. The message basically states that all bids placed by a certain buyer are being canceled and that I will be receiving a Final Value Fee (FVF) credit as well as Insertion Fee (IF) credit (the credits have already been applied to my account). It also says that the buyer is no longer a member. This leads me to believe the buyer may have been banned for doing something fraudulent. My guess would be they were buying coins using a stolen credit card or something like that, but I don't know for sure. The member was new and still hasn't reached 1 month (member since June 27th, 2014). It should also be noted that this buyer made a bunch of purchases in the short time he was an active member.

I'm guessing since eBay has credited FVF and IF, they may ultimately be deducting the funds from my PayPal account. I've read on other forums that sometimes PayPal (or the CC company) eats the loss and does not deduct the funds. I have no idea if that's true or not. The problem I have in all this is that I have already shipped the item (purchase was made on 7-7-2014) and eBay's message was received today (7-20-2014). Luckily for me the item is not of high value (less than $10). However since it was not of high value, I didn't use tracking in my shipping. I'm guessing this could be an issue if PayPal requests proof that the item was shipped. My bigger concern is this happening again in the future, and possibly on an item of higher value.

I'm curious to know how it turned out for others who have gone through this.

If you wanted, just send them a second empty package with a tracking so you have a number for them. Just because ebay is crediting you the fees they charged, does not mean they are taking the money out of your paypal. The way my ebay works, ebay sends me a bill occasionally, and I then pay that with paypal. Basically they are saying you do not owe any fees for that transaction, so they should not take any from paypal for it.

 

Thanks for the reply. Most comments I've read on eBay's message board say they basically got fees free as they didn't get the money deducted from their PayPal account. However I did read one person say that PayPal put a hold on the funds. Keep in mind, I am talking about the payment from buyer for the item sold, not fees. I was curious if they would do that since eBay is basically canceling the transaction (as if it never happened). Regardless, I'm not concerned in this case since item was not very valuable. Just wanting to get others feedback in case it happens again in the future. Thanks again.

 

You will just have to watch your paypal account to see if they take the person's payment back. If they do, let them know you already shipped, and they would probably give it back.

 

You should have tracking on every package you ship.

 

unless tracking costs more than the item is worth... but the post office (at least mine) adds tracking to every single package now, whether you pay for it or not. They always ask if I want it, I say no, then they put it on anyways and don't charge me. The number is printed on the receipt.

 

If you order online you can get free tracking. The 1 time I went to the post office they charged $1.5 for tracking.

 

So regular $0.49, $0.70 non-machinable, or $0.91 non-machinable and added weight rates can be purchased with tracking for no additional cost online? That doesn't seem correct.

 

I haven't paid for tracking on low value items because it would eat up all the profit. I know I can charge shipping or add it to the price, but then the item will never sell. I have to rethink things now since it's becoming apparent there is too much risk. I will either have to stop selling items of very low value or sell them bundled. Unfortunately there is no way for me to make a profit selling them individually while being shipped with tracking. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated.

 

Yeah if something is under $10 I'd sell them in lots of maybe 4 or more.

 

Okay I see that is Priority Mail. I normally use First Class with tracking which is about $2, more or less. Priority Mail with tracking included would make sense for items greater than $10 - especially since $50 of insurance is included - but I just can't figure out a way to sell an item AND make a profit when sale price is less than $10 while shipping Priority, let alone First Class w/ Tracking.

My websites homepage is currently set to APMEX's rss feed of eBay listings for ASEs. Since I don't own any ASEs I just put their feed since I wanted a popular coin on the landing page - also from a reputable seller. In light of this new information on their pricing (thank you for bringing it to my attention), I will soon be changing it. Most of the listings throughout other pages are my actual listings. Ok I'm done. You just don't know when to keep your mouth shut. I'm not going to be nice, and this is my last message to you. you are critical of someone's website because they are charging $7 over trading value for an ase. Yet you are charging $60 for a bu Morgan and I can buy them from Apmex for 25% less! I can even get pcgs ms63 Morgans still cheaper then what you want.

All I was doing was pointing out what I thought may be a mistake. He said he was going to fix it. Also I can't have the lowest prices for everything. some people are going to have better deals than me. That's just how it goes.
Since when did I lecture experts? sure I have made some educational threads that would be more useful to a newcomer but did I ever sit here and try to lecture @LostDutchman about anything? heck no I know he knows a lot more than I do because he has more experience than me.

I think you should watch what you say Vic you have a lot of misunderstandings about me. For instance you claim that some of these guys have sold a single coin for more than every penny I own. How do you know how much money I really have? have you seen my bank statements? I don't think so.

Go drink a beer or smoke a cigarette or whatever else you do that calms you down.

 

1. Since when did I ever tell peter how to run CoinTalk? this is news to me. I report it when I see it but that's about it. I don't sit there and message peter all day telling him that he should ban people from the forum or anything like that. Again know what you're talking about before you post.

You know, when I first read this post of yours I didn't take any offense to it. I think it's because the price you criticized wasn't my product (as previously explained it being from APMEX) so it didn't strike me as personal. However after reading Vic's post I realized you were out of line sir. It's one thing to try and help someone by making suggestions on how one can improve their website with regards to design or layout, for example, but to criticize someone's prices is just flat out disrespectful and unprofessional. Perhaps it was meant in good will, but the way you "said" it with the snide comment about "for that price I hope you are throwing in..." was simply rude, and again unprofessional. Now my suggestion to you, when it comes to other folks' prices, is that you mind your own business.

Speaking of minding ones own business, it would behoove someone to make sure their prices are in line with market values before criticizing someone elses prices.
