pres dollar glut

I pick up five dollar coins from PNC bank. They ordered $1000 worth and are begging customers to take them.

i think we as collectors should try to use them where ever possible. this includes halves,ikes,sba,sacs and prez. i also use the $2 bill as much as possible as well. the way i see it even if people collect them or save them its less in bank vaults. its fun too. so get to the bank and get what you can afford.

 

the problem with what you are saying is that you do not take into account the fact that the teller looks at you funny and says " why in the world would you want those?" if you ask for coins or rolls, and then they act like they are doing you a big favor by getting them.

 

Another thought. It's not uncommon for people to have, say, 100.00 in 20's in their wallet. Would you really want to carry around 100 dollars in coins??

I think the weight and mass of large numbers (say over 10 dollars) make dollar coins impracticle for everyday use.

 

you know, i never thought of that, but i like the idea. i would like to see some combination of 2,5,10,20. something. i think either eliminate the dollar bill or try to take this route, although i think the elimination of the bill would be best...then there would be no choice.

 

Absolutely. I'm in favor of switching to coins. And yes, if my bank offered coins, I'd take them. Heck, I spend dollar coins and half dollars. Keeps everybody on their toes. I was simply stating the attitude of most Americans. I've been in enough countries that use coins instead of notes and have experienced the myriad of advantages to using coins that I could be in favor of nothing else.

 

no ones saying to carry around $100 in coins. i always have about $10 mix of halves and dollar coins on me.
like at the supermarket the bills $76 dollars 70 in cash $6 in coins thats all. i dont cary 1 dollar bills either

 

Nobody would have to carry around $100 dollars in coins. There would continue to be $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 dollar bills. Nobody I know carries around $100 dollars in one dollar bills in their wallets either.

 

I wonder what happened to our perception over the years? When I was a kid (early fifties) dollar and half-dollar coins were common, everyday use. All the stores had them in the drawer and they were parted out regularly by the checkout ladies, especially half-dollars. It was no big deal to get a Peace Dollar from the corner grocery store. Yup, this was exactly the thought I was having. Once there are enough $1 coins to replace all of the bills in circulation, then it's much easier to kill the bill.

 

I think back when I was a kid in grade school and many kids would get silver dollars for lunch. Lunch then was like 0.60 for a cheese steak. Maybe the pockets were made of a stronger material back then .

The only way for the damn program to work is to stop printing one dollar bills. In Scotland and northern Ireland, they still have pound notes, and the pound and two pound coins don't circulate very well either.

This is a well known fact, and why we don't do that here is a mystery. The Pres. dollar program is doomed to fail because the feds won't stop printing bills.

 

Oh, to go back in time, lol. Wonder if they stopped printing one dollar bills, if they would be worth anything. Or they might just become worthless. Be nice if they gained in value.

Dollar update. I Just got back from the local bank, I asked if they had any of the dollars.. they ALL THE TELLERS) knew nothing about what I was talking about. The manager did tell me she had seen something about a new coin or something a while back but they were not going to bring them in unless they were required to. Interesting..

 

Editorial in today's Chicago Tribune about the new coin and the politicians not killing the $1 bill. It said it didn't work with metric system, professional soccer and electric cars and as long as we keep printing bills the dollar coin is doomed too. Thanks, Douglas

 

As of tommorow I'm going to do that.....

I'm going to start paying for all trasactions that are from 1.00-5.00 with Dollar coins... Maybe higher....

Heh, try paying for dinner somewhere nice.... Break out 85-95 Georges and watch the waitresses reaction....

 

Man if we had 2,5,10,20.00 coins, would the price of proof sets and mint sets go through the roof...

 

hmmm, didn't think about that. sadly though, i have not been buying the sets. i did not want to start, as i would not be happy until i had them all. i did buy the quarter sets though. not quite as exciting, but at least i will have them all.

as for the coins 2,5,10,20...perhaps that would be too drastic to start, but i think a change is in order. it is going to have to be forced for it to ever take hold.

 

when I do that with halves , people look at me like I`m crazy , even had one store clerk tell me that she would give me my cup of coffee on credit so that I would not have to spend my "collectables" .

 

I heard a good one on the radio tonight. It was a clip about the new dollar. The guy reading the text said that the new dollar would weigh 8 ounces apiece! Now if they were that heavy, we would all need heavier duty pockets. I wonder if anyone else caught that.
We could find a new use for these dollar coins at that weight, doorstops.
