I have recently jumped back on the Ancient Coin Chariot and purchased these two As. (did I spell that right?). Been looking for these types for a while and couldn't resist #1.) Commodus AE, As O: Head of Commodus Rt. as Hercules, wearing lion skin headdress R: HER-CUL / RO-MAN / AV-GV, divided by club, all within wreath 24.8 mm, 11.15 grams It's surfaces are a bit granular but I am still liking portrait and the reverse legend. It is better in hand; is tough to photograph. #2.) Hadrian AE, As, 117-138 AD O: Laureate bust of Hadrian Rt., HADRIANVS AVGUSTVS R; Galley left - five rowers, a pilot, vexellium, and standard at stern. FELICITATATI AVG COS III PP SC 9.77 Grams. 26 mm I am really digging the galley on this one Thanks for looking!
I love both types. I especially love the crazy Commodus coin. This effectively is what got him killed, his psychotic belief he was the demi-god Hercules. I have been meaning to buy one of these for quite a while.
I like these types too, but I haven't been able to find them within my budget. These would do just fine (depending on price of course).
Both are great additions. Almost bought a silver one of commodus like that at a good price but other coins bumped it off so I never bothered. Long sold now.
Howdy TJC ... man, those are a couple of very sweet new additions (congrats) => I have a few Hadrian examples, but I don't have a sweet ship-example like your new sweety!! (it is a very cool coin) Ummm, I do however have a similar Commodus example (yah, I love this coin) Club-coins rock!!
A cool two, TJC. I have an extremely budget silver version of the Commodus that I'd like to upgrade at some point and the Hadrian galley types are an old favorite. Here's mine, a little different from yours :
Thanks for the replies. Bing, all in, I am under 2 Franklins. I am happy is the important thing Bet you find a better deal when you do find one Steve, real nice Commodus as Hercules! Zumbly, really like your Hadrian/Galley coin!
