Alot more gold Ingots & coins found http://www.dispatch.com/content/stories/local/2014/07/17/gold-ship-treasure-revealed.html
I wonder what this will do to the SS Central America pedigreed coins already on the market. I don't own any, but I'm guessing premiums were paid for these coins, so to have 13K more added to the inventory, just might hurt the market. Of course grade will come into play, but generally, scarcity is what drives a pedigree premium. On that same note another 1300 double eagles should also throw a slight wrench into the market. It will interesting to see what condition these coins are in after being brought up from the bottom.
wow great story. I bought a book on this SS Central America. awesome that they might find more down there. thanks for posting this.
I find the dimes interesting as well. First how well did they survive, and second not being gold and therefor "cheaper" coins what might they market for? Might be a way for the little guy to be able to have a chance for a SS Central America coin.
They filmed both expeditions the first one neted 400m (1988-1991) the second tbd ? i wonder if there will be a third expedition there might be alot more gold down inside the ship ! youtube=shipofgold
Give it some time. The story about what they found just broke Friday. They probably have released any information about the dimes yet and it will be awhile before they are on the market. They are most likely still being conserved
While I readily admit shipwreck coins have a definite "cool factor", if you decide to actually purchase one just be mindful that they are often grossly over-priced, especially so when they are first released. So don't let excitement and interest get the better of you. Be patient, look around, and wait until you find one more reasonably priced. It can be done.
Thanks Doug, good advice. I was looking for a shipwreck coin for some time now but found them all too expensive. In case somebody else is interested, NGC classifies 'shipwreck effect' coins into different categories depending on their condition prior to the saltwater exposure: http://www.ngccoin.com/specialty-services/shipwreck-coin-certification/effect-designation.aspx
Curious to see what that does to the prices of the $20 gold coins. Ever since I saw the History Channel show, that has always been my dream coin. I have an interest in double eagles, but my budget has only allowed for common dates in "meh" condition. I few times I started to save for one, but life or other coins always got in the way.
Probably won't do much to the price of the double eagles. The first recovery found MANY thousands of them. I doubt if another 1,300 will really cause much change.
I was thinking if a couple graded out really high. I don't know the likely hood of this, but wouldn't some top pop additions hurt the market price? I'm also thinking it would really depend on the coin, mm and grade. We'll just have to wait and see.
A whole lot of the first batch graded out high as well. While there are some other dates and mint involved thevast majority of the double eagles were 1857 S. And if there are some other dates in this 1,300 that would only be a bonus. Until the SS Central America wreck was recovered MS type I double eagles were as scarce as hens teeth, but the pieces recovered didn't cause the prices to drop, they caused demand to grow because now people could actually GET one. Even if none of this new batch are 1857 S I doubt it will cause prices to fall.
i just have mixed feelings regarding this ship. its cool they have located the wreck and doing salvage operations in retrieving the item(s) from it. but, didnt people die going down/ intombed with this boat ....???
Died as a result of the sinking yes. Entombed in the ship I do not believe so. Some tried to swim with their gold in their moneybelts and that didn't work too well. Others were merely separated in the storm drowned and were lost. But if you object to recovery simply because people died as the result of the sinking them a great many recovery sites would have to be abandoned, same thing for collapsed or burned buildings etc. The World Trade Center would have had to have been left as a pile of rubble in New York rather than "disturb" a gravesite. What about mines where there are collapses and miners die? Should the mine be abandoned?
