I know those of who who were in the GTG contest have seen these, but I thought I would share with the rest of the class. I had another terrible PCGS submission. I knew some in my submission may be body bagged, but overall I was shocked and extremely disappointed. I think the grader must have been in a bad mood. I am not, in anyway, an expert in grading. I have shared my opinion on each coin and look forward to hearing yours. 1920 Standing Liberty Quarter UNC Details - Questionable color. I knew this had a chance at QC, but I was definitely leaning toward acceptable. *I do not feel this was in anyway artificially toned, just not market acceptable. 1964 D Kennedy Half Dollar UNC Details - cleaned I cannot agree with this in any way, shape or form. They really dropped the ball on this one. It is a true stunner with beautiful, blazing, cartwheel luster. 1883 No Cents Liberty Nickel UNC Details - cleaned I see no evidence of cleaning. It has full cartwheel luster. Maybe the color caused them to grade it that way. 1864 Two Cent Piece Large Motto UNC Details - Damaged I have no idea what they are referring to... 1868 Shield Nickel UNC Details - Questionable Color I can understand this one. Especially due to the black substance seen throughout areas of the coin. I was actually pleased it was UNC. 1877 Seated Liberty Half Dollar AU-50 I was really hoping for AU-55. 1940 D Jefferson Nickel MS 66FS I was extremely disappointed in this grade. This nickel is a 67 ALL DAY in my opinion. Especially considering the 47-S below. 1947 S Jefferson Nickel MS 66 I was hoping for an FS designation. Pretty darn close and I knew it could go either way. I agree with the 66. Thanks for looking. I'm not giving up on submission just yet. I will be cracking some of these out and re-submitting under secure plus. -g
Do you think the seated half only got 50 because of the muted luster? Sorry to hear about the SLQ being body bagged. That's a beautiful coin! Overall, sorry you weren't happy with the results. Don't know what else to say, but crack 'em out and give it another shot on those you disagree with.
Well, I think you are right about the luster on the 50c. In fact, of all the coins submitted, that was the one I would have leaned towards "cleaned". You know why? because I know for a fact it was.
In the future if you have a coin that you think may come back QC you'll be better off sending it in a separate order. It seems that sometimes one bad coin can skew the opinions on other coins in the order.... I hardly ever send in lots of toners in one order unless they all have textbook toning.
Although I like the look, the SLQ looks just a little "helped" to me. It may be my eyes, but the Kennedy looks like it saw just the barest of wiping on the high spots at JFK's cheek, truncation of the neck, and on the shield. Perhaps a bit of dirty cabinet friction had been removed sometime in the past? Like PCGS, I think the 1883 nickel is cleaned. The absence of color around star 1 and low on the bust just looks too suspect to me. The 2 center looks normal to me. No surprise on the shield nickel . . . I would have been a bit more generous on the Half Dollar, probably assigning it an AU53, which I believe you'll get eventually. I think you'll have to resort to a different TPG to get a 55 out of that coin. I agree with you on both of the Jeffersons.
Thanks for the input. I do appreciate it. Sometimes I feel it would be great if they would actually assign a grade to a QC coin instead of just UNC. Especially for a coin like the SLQ, which I believe is a high grade quarter. Life goes on.
For the 2 cent are they referring to the little tiny thing in the upper left corner on the obverse rim? That's the only thing that would be "Damage"
I do see that, but it looks more like a cud. You may be right. Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk
Pcgs has always been hard on grading toner. If toned could be Pcgs want to require their coin sniffing machine that adds one more fee? They Pcgs did sue a few dealers for doctoring back in 2009 or2010. But have not seen an outcome .
all beautiful for sure, but 1 stands out more than others for me it's the....seated half dollar... wow awesome coin there. envy is the word on that 1.
My last submission yielded one coin which did not make the grade I had hoped for. It is a 1916 Mercury dime which I was certain would get at least an MS-65FB designation and it got an MS-64FB. I'll post a picture of it later.
I just sent them 14 coins 10 of which are screamingly original early circulated coins a couple have been dipped early and retoned one gold has a minor reverse scratch should grade but wouldn't cac and one was cracked outta a qc slab that I totally didn't agree with well see what they think
I really feel that that is too minor to detail it , yet I can't see anything else . That SLQ is beautiful IMHO as it has a great strike . Though I guess I can see why they gave it a QC , to me it's ok .
I wish I could see these coins in hand to see where PCGS is coming from. It is really hard to tell from photos for both the coins considered undergraded AND the ones with the "problems". jom
They've been a little weird on how they're grading stuff the detailed 2 coins on my last submission as cleaned I still can't find it no matter how much I look yet they graded one clean that was an obvious old dip and retone and had the glossiness of a cleaned but not hairlines early coin and graded another clean with some pinscratch graffiti I didn't see when I sent it (I was in a hurry) but it jumped at me when I examined it clean they seem to be detailing coins that shouldn't be and passing some real questionable calls
