I recently bought two Morgans from my LCS for $20 each. An 1879 O and an 1887 O. I know they are common ones from the set but I hate the dipped look and only bought them for the metal value really. What is a good way to make them look more natural without trying to clean them? Should I just keep them in one of my pockets each day for a while for some of the dip to wear off or would I be wasting my time?
I would just use them for fillers in your set until you can find examples that you would be happy with. When coins are dipped, it just removes the dirt from the coin (when done properly). There is no dip to wear off by carrying them around in your pocket. Dip cleans coins, it doesn't apply anything to the surface to make it look new. On a side note, looks like you were able to buy them for the cull price. You did ok, not a bad deal.
There is nothing you can do. Dipping actually removes a very small layer of the surface of the coin. If a coin is overdipped, too much gets removed and the coins begins to have a very dull appearance. There is no way to reverse it. If you bought them for metal value only...then you got what you paid for. They are basically just really old bullion pieces.
Looks like they may have been dipped too many times. But I only bought them for metal value being they are now culls in AU condition knowing they weren't worth anything more.
Yes got them in the cull bin so I got a good deal for sure, they will just never really be worth anything more than melt which I understood when buying them.
Maybe it is something else, but it looks like either they were dipper w few times or possibly using something else.
If your seeing a washed out, dead pan look then it's probably what Camero told you. Over dipped coins burn down the flow lines and diminish the luster. There's nothing you can do about that.
I would probably try to sell these 2 and use the proceeds to purchase a nice one. That's the beauty of getting coins at a bargain price, you can just roll the money back into your collection!
Modern dipping solutions should leave no visible residue. If there is a whitish grey residue on the coins, wash very well with water as some idiots ( especially old time miners with access) may have used some cyanide solution to dip them, which is dangerous, possibly lethal, etc. Probably a good idea to do it anyway if any residue.
It's not AU if they have been dipped to death. Spot is about $16.50...so $20 is pretty average for "junk silver" like this.
That's pretty typical...but the OP stated that these coins have been dipped to the point where the luster is gone.
Over dipping makes coins extremely dull and lifeless. It strips the coin of it's luster. It does not make it look polished.
Silverware polish consists of 'dip type chemicals' , mild abrasives, and a wax material. The dip chemicals remove the corrosion/rarnish/tone ( which ever word you want to use, they are just degrees of the same thing), the abrasive tends to scratch off the surface, and the wax fills inthe scratches and reflects the light for a polished look. Coin dip just does the first aspect.
