So I was going through my Tokens and unidentified coins. I came across a piece of metal, no doubt steel. However I am not sure if it is a steel penny blank. 1943 Steel Penny Diameter 18.9mm Steel supposed blank diameter 18.6mm 1943 Steel Penny thickness 1.4mm Steel supposed blank diameter 1.7mm Now I know the #'s don't match, but I think this blank would flatten out and become thinner, and wider after the die strikes it? Can anyone lend any opinions? Thanks, ~Barnabus
I would check the weight as well. They were made with zinc plated steel. Is the edge of the blank plated? Images would be cool.
The blanks were punched out of zinc plated steel so as Larry was asking if the edge was plated, it should have a sandwich appearance, thin layer of zinc on top and bottom, and a thicker layer of unplated steel as the core ( middle)
I will post up some pics after work tomorrow. The thing looks sandwiched, but it looks the same on top and bottom. If I turn it in the light, I can clearly see that it has a slight different color in center, but it is like thread thin. I do not think it is an electrical box punch out, there is no "Sprue" or "Tail" from where it would have been attached. It is smooth all around.
