Coin roll hunting can be very exciting. Especially whenever you find a goodie. In fact, stumbling across something unusual in your change and researching it is a gateway to coin collecting.

My question to you coin roll hunters, do any of you ever GIVE BACK?

I frequently buy a lot of dated buffalo nickels for say 25c ea on eBay and then stick 1 in a roll of nickels until the lot is gone. I'll deposit the rolls over time or a few at a time at the bank. Hopefully I've made somebody's day.

perhaps it is people like you 2 that are the reason why I can still find a buffalo nickel and a few wheat cents every now and again.

You should try re-circulating some coins! It's quite fun. Almost as much fun as finding them!

I will spend oddball coins just to get the back into circulation. When I get a group lot with crap like dateless buffalos, cull IHC, Ikes, $2 bills my usual thought would be to just toss them into the pile. I try, though, to consciously force myself to put them into my pocket and spend them at the next opportunity.

Most of my "give back" though is donating or giving away coins to YN or others who are curious about coins. That is how most coins ever leave my possession. I have given away hundreds of late roman coins to people.

I don't have much of a collection, but I like to give my duplicates to coin members who run local organizations or have children they want to get interested in collecting.

I collected as a kid and recently got back in to the hobby just over two years ago. Just before I started collecting again I had some clad coin to roll to bring to the bank and I had probably 6 if I can remember dateless buffalos and threw them in one roll of Nickels. Thinking back on it now I would have loved to get that one as I try to roll hunt here and there. Hopefully someone got that roll and was pleasently surprised.

Great question by the way. I love threads like these!

Shhhh don't tell anyone but next coin club (I run it at my local library) i'm going to put something cool in a roll (probably pennies because I don't have any buffalos and cant afford to give away silver) maybe a wheatie or 2, someone's definitely getting a steal penny :). So basically i'm going to sweeten the pot for them, sorry everyone else :)

I always ask for halves and twos at the bank and wind up spending most of them. The halves I've gotten have all been clad, so occasionally I'll spend one locally. Same with the twos - a lot of people love them and rarely see them, so you can often put a smile on someone's face by pulling them out. Strangely enough, most people dislike small dollars where I live - ticket machines at local transit stations dispense them, and businesses near the stops are always getting lots of them.

I also enjoy spending $2 bills. The banks don't always have them, but it's fun getting a strap of them then going shopping. I don't really like to spend old coins like IHCs or buffalos though unless it's mixed in where the cashier won't immediately notice. If they notice what I'm giving them and they aren't familiar with coins they ask about them. To me, that spoils the fun of going home and researching it themselves to see what they have.

Whenever my wife and I go on vacation we get a strap of $2 bills to use as tips and Ikes if I can find any at the local banks. She works at a bank so we can always get the $2 bills a lot easier. A lot of people in my experience enjoys getting these.

I'll spend Buffaloes, Indians, Kennedys, Ikes and silver certs at the market or McDs, now and again. It's always cool to see the reaction of the worker. One actually told me I should keep it, because it's "worth a lot of money!" I tipped her extra for her honesty and told her it's okay, since I had a lot of them.

I'm going to St. John in October. I wonder if they would appreciate some $2 bills circulating around. That would be fun and interesting.

I'm very glad to hear the responses on this thread! I hope a lot of you do join in (or continue in) "giving back" in unique or interesting ways and experience the fun in doing so! Treylxapi47, if you do and this thread is still around, I hope to hear of your experience!

I gave some friends 50 $2's in a card for their wedding gift and as far as I know they used them in St. Lucia and I am pretty sure the locals took them for tips. Wouldn't doubt it if they would in St John too.

well i have two thoughts with this. either the folks down there will love them for their novelty factor and probably dont see that many down that way. the other thought is that the dont see them often so the wont recognize them as legal tender and think i am gypping them out of a 'real' tip.

I have a bag full of clad half dollars. Got them from a relative, perhaps I'll start leaving them as part of a tip.

I dont coin roll hunt, but one of the nicest local dealers has piles of $2 bills and silver certificates that he gives to kids when they come into the shop. He also gives them in peoples change. I think that's pretty darn cool.

I ran into a similar issue when spending half dollars - they're so uncommon in circulation that they were confused for dollar coins on several occasions. Susan B's are fairly common in my area because ticket machines at transit station give out small dollars (a mix of Susan B, Sacagawea & Presidential)
