lol you are right... I'm not sure where Trajan came from... I found it on wildwinds under domitian but typed trajan...
Domitian with Minerva is a common item issued for several years in several varieties. I consider the owl at feet a better type and this has a clear little bird and well detailed boat. The tone is also nicer than most as is the portrait smirk. Mine is 6 years later and weaker in every respect. It was $45 in 1998. The OP is 2-3X that despite a little wear on the laurel wreath and reverse high centering which keeps it from being a high end coin.
Again => I love your new coin (congrats) ... Oh, and I totally agree with Doug that the "owl on the boat" is an added bell/whistle (definitely a new want-list addition) ... ummm however, I still like my run-of-the-mill Domitian & Minerva (enjoy)
Fantastic coin LostDutchman! Rare and and in fine style. Of the four standard Minerva reverse types struck for Domitian's on his denarii this is my favourite. It's also the only Minerva type unique to his reign. As an aside, the reverse features Minerva standing on the capitol of a rostral column and not a 'prow' as commonly attributed. The Oxford example for RIC 730 (plate coin 730b) actually depicts a prow and you can see the difference!
Welcome Vesp70. I actually have the correct description in my catalogue: "IMP XVII COS XIIII CENS P P P Minerva fighting right with spear and shield atop capital of rostral column, owl at her feet"
Well, the coin that started this thread is wonderful, whomever owns it. Sorry, I thought it was LostDutchman. And might I add, it's "capital of rostral column" and not "capitol" as I mistakenly typed above! Also, it's nice to see some familiar "faces" here.
Some very nice Domitians. There are quite a few scarcities to be found in the series. I bought this one some time back with COS XIIII in the reverse fields rather than a full reverse legend.
