Just which coins have disappeared is a great question. From what I can see, wheat cents are not extinct yet, but will soon be so. Certainly the buffalo nickel is gone from general circulation, along with silver content coins. They may show up from time to time as a fluke, but I suspect they are there by unusual circumstances.
Wheats are actually quite common. Buffalos are rare but they are out there. Silver quarters are very rare, but silver dimes show up from time to time.
I don't know if I would call them "common." Sure, they are not hard to find if you are roll searching...but they certainly occupy far less than 1% of the cents in circulation.
I've worked at a convenience store for over a year and the 20th century coins that I havent found are Barber dimes, Mercury dimes, Barber quarters, standing Liberty quarters, Barber halves, walking Liberty halves, silver dollars, and all coins larger than $1. I have found at least one example of all the other coins from the 20th century. I did find a Barber dime in the reject slot of a Coinstar machine, however.
Less than 1% isn't what I'd consider "nearly extinct". I usually find one per shift. Last night, for example, I found a 1942 and a 1951-S on an overnight shift that wasn't very busy. The '42 came out of a roll and a customer spent the '51-S. I'd say that wheats make up 1/2% of the population.
Bugo, they may be more common where you are. I've gotten two wheat cents in change in the last 25 years.
I see them occasionally I noticed that as soon as silver shot up tho I never get silver coins in change anymore I used to get one every month or two now it's every year or 2. I'm even noticing copper pre 82 cents becoming scarcer
I haven't gotten anything special besides a wheat in my change since I can remember unless I am roll hunting. Would be thrilled if I pulled any silver just from getting change back from a purchase.
I bought a roll of Eisenhower Dollars at the bank about 4 years ago that had a Morgan Dollar in the middle of it.
I looked down outside my local post office about a month ago and picked up a "V-Nickel" right off of the ground. I was dumbfounded. I gave it to my seven year old son as a good luck charm.
I think that the 2009 nickel and dimes are no longer in circulation. In fact, I don't believe that they ever went into circulation in central New York.
I find 2009 nickels quite often. Most of them are quite circulated. I don't like them, but I hold onto them because I'm told they are scarce. If you want any, I'd trade them for about anything. Wheats or pre-1960 nickels would make me happy.
My coworker got 6 Walking Liberty halves at work last week. A customer paid with them. She has better luck at finding silver than I do.
