Roman Republican Coinage, by Michael Crawford, 1974, lists 211 symbol pair varieties. One pair has the symbol CCXLVI on each side perhaps implying that there are a total of 246 symbols pairs. The Paul Bonnano website above lists the current known total. There are still more to find out there. Martin
That's insane and must have been expensive back then to make individual dies for all those coins. Certainly great for collectors.
These symbol pairs come from separate die pairs, specifically engraved to go together. If you find other examples of the majority of symbol pairs you will see that they come from the same dies. There are a couple of exceptions to this where a single symbol pair seems to come from two pairs of dies.
That's in particular interesting how they would do that with the dies and all those varieties of symbols. Unfortunately, I cannot read that page linked earlier. I can view the main page of the site and other articles but not the L. Papius Database. It says " Sorry! You do not have permission to access this location."
