I picked this up as a broad strike error for $1.00 and noticed the rim was off, then saw the line under his neck, and on further inspection I see shadows around his face, and the date. Is this a double die error? If so it is common, or valuable? Thanks
Okay, I will research more into the die clashing. However I do want to know, if it was a die clash, can it still affect the date? Based on that picture which is the best I can see this coin because I do not have a loop or anything, the date looks like it has shadows on it as well, on the 5 and 8. As well as I have been looking on ebay past sales and random google image searches I have seen several 1985 P dimes with errors. Does it make it more valuable if this happened to other of the same coin? or less valuable?
I would not think this is PMD because the back is flawless, but the front rim is real wide. I think that the issues with this coin will all be during the minting process.
That's neat! I was thinking it had to do with a striking error. I hope you can post a better picture of the date soon,
I have no idea what all is wrong with this guy lol. But it sure seems like this coin has a lot going on with it. I think it is worth a dollar, but how much more No clue. I will see about getting some high grade photos from a friend of mine. Until then, sorry to say it, but that is as good as I can do with my cell phone. I tried taking 100 more, and still none that good.
Hey if you only have a cell there is a Magnifier app that is free, that is if you have a smart phone/droid or iPhone. I have used it on the go. It gets some pretty GD ones. Just thought I would let you know. Take care and have GD one!
Okay so this is weird. I got a few magnify apps, and man this is so hard to do with a phone, gotta hold perfectly still. But I got a close up as best I could, had to go outside to do it, so the glare ruins the picture. And you cannot see the line under neck at all for the most part, BUT I found something really freaking weird. What looks like a "S" above the P, but the S is so small. It is right above where the line under his neck is. What could this be??? As well, lend any info you can based on the picture I took, like I said though, a lot of glare. The weirdest thing though, is when zoomed in this far, I can barely tell the other problems with it, but they are very visible without magnification, as seen in pictures above. I assure you this is the same coin! By the way if you look above his neck behind his head I can vaguely see a GN or CN I can't tell. This is weird. Tell me someone else see's these things lol. This coin is 17.8mm and 1.2mm thick, which is less than the mint says too! I keep finding CRAZY things about this coin, I grabbed another 1985 P dime out of a jar of change I have, and the ears look different, and so does the smile, eye, and nostril. As well I can faintly make out a J on the coin to the right and up from the "S" when I re magnified it with my phone. The sun is no longer out so I couldn't get another picture of the S while still having the J, so I did not save the picture.
Took this thing to two coin shops today. This is what one said: I have been dealing with coins for over 40 years, and have sold hundreds of thousands of them, and bought nearly as many. I have done countless Mint error inspections and purchases. I have never seen a mint error like this, but it is probably common... As for the S, I can't see it, I don't have a microscope, but I know that it is not there, and your eyes are fooling you, because there is no logical way it could have gotten there, and it cannot be there. I would say it is worth a few dollars at most. The second said: This is an interesting coin, what do you think it is? I answered him. I can tell you that it is a mint error, but I don't know what I would even call this, it has so many apparent issues, that I could only say it is a mint error coin. I do see the S, and I have no Idea what that could even be, it is so much smaller than the P, that it cannot be a accidental extra Mint mark. But it is almost perfectly aligned to be a mint mark, and looks very symmetrical. I do think that there is something there, but I cannot be sure if it is an S, or maybe a foreign object landed on coin before die struck and left the impression. I would suggest that if you can spend the money, then send it in to be verified, graded, and encapsulated. If you win, you will win big, but if you lose, well just be prepared to lose, and hope for the best. So that is the verdict. Now comes time to save up some $$ and send it in, after all. $100.00 is the cost to get it graded and verified, and if I lose, eh, I'll get 100$ more dollars someday. However I guess I will look at it like gambling, 50/50 in my opinion. Laissez les bons temps rouler
Got it looked at, This coin has an obverse/Rev strike. The coin was struck once with a super weak strike, then flipped and struck again. The "S" is from "Pluribus" At least that is what I was told by a coin shop that goes to the big events like the one coming up in Chicago. Let me know what you think!
