Hi, everybody. I heard from eBay today and apparently they have enough people for US Coins, so I will not be joining their group. I was told, though, that they need experts in World Coins. They apparently don't have anyone with expertise in that area. If anyone interested would PM me with their name, ANA#, eBay ID, and email address, I'd love to compile a list to send to Drew Marich. There are too many people on this forum who care about the scammers out there and could do something to change it. Here is the rest of what I learned from the manager today.

The CCW has 7 members right now and all of them are "US Coin Experts". They feel that they have plenty of people to cover US Coins. When I asked why so many auctions have been permitted to run their course even though they were reported, I was told that the procedure is for the reports to go to the CCW. The CCW then evaluates and sends the ones they deem worthy to the ANA. The ANA then reviews and sends it back to eBay for action. I said that this procedure would definitely allow any 1-day auctions to go full term and most 3-day auctions. He agreed but said that even once the auctions are closed that appropriate action is taken against the seller where warranted. Draw your own conclusions.

Come on you Darksiders - I would love to see one of our own on their committee and getting something done. Hope I hear from some of you. :)

How about closed auctions like that carved up 21-D Mercury Dime? The incriminating evidence is still there (i.e. picture of the offending coin), so can CCW try to kill the transaction or sanction the seller?

Also, what about those "grab bag" auctions (i.e. you pay $2 and you get a drawing in a bunch of coins with a handful of expensive ones (supposedly) included)? To me, that is akin to an unaudited lottery, which, in most states I would think is considered gambling and hence illegal. Why don't those get shut down immediately??

I just wish I had the time to participate, but unfortunately it's just not in the cards.
I just reported the same guy for at least the third time about selling coins dated before the denomination was created, and I guess now I understand why nothing has happened, even though I include this in most of my reports:

Another thing -- the process they set up is too slow. Any member of the CCW should be given the authority to shut down the auction immediately, with the ANA providing overisight, but not having to review each one. Ebay could put in thier terms and conditions that auctions are subject to be yanked by Coinwatch, and then be appealed by the seller, if he/she so chooses.

Because it's a long process. Each reported auction is reviewed individually by the CCW and then sent to the ANA and then sent back to eBay for action. This process takes more than 24 hours so nothing is being done immediately. Unfortunately, this is the system that we have to deal with. It makes it that much harder to get things done, but we still can't give up. It's not the best system, but eBay sets the parameters that we have to work within.

That's why I would like to see someone involved from here that might be listened to. They're not going to change anything based on an opinion that did not come from one of their own members. If we have a member on their committee, that member can make suggestions that might be listened to.

My question actally is can CCW do something after the auction is closed? For example, on the tooled dime, you and I reported the listing, but it ended to soon for CCW to kill it. However, now that they have had time to review it, and conclude (the obvious) that the time is tooled and the seller deceived the "winning" bidder that the dime is something it is not, can they take steps to try to prevent the transaction from completeing, or force the seller to "unwind" the transaction even if it occured??

What do you mean? The 7 members are not ANA members? I thought they were supposed to be both ANA members and Ebay members?

I think ccw and ana should make anybody who is caught selling "fake" coins have to buy the real verson of that coin and sell it to the winning bidder for the same price as the bidder won it... that will teach the fakers rrrreeeaaaallll fast... then again there not the law but maybe they should be the police of the coins.. unless they are in which case forget the aformentioned statement... :D

I think what Susan means is that she would like to see a member of Coin Talk on the committee.

Welcome to eBay. Although we all hate scammers, I really doubt eBay will let non eBay employees ever pull a auction.

I guess they could - they could warn the seller, they could contact the buyer, they could suspend the seller. Personally, I do not think that a lot of "after the auction" action is being taken at this point, but it is good that it can be.

Ebays bid retraction policy actually increases fraud , EXAMPLE from personal experiance,I bid and won an auction, I get the Invoice and the seller says make your money order payable to this guy, (not Him) 0 feedback new seller, Now what recourse would I have if I pay this other guy whom Ebay does not even have any info or control over?

can I cancel my Bid NO can I negate the sale NO has the seller responded to my emails NO, did he answer the phone when I called NO,

Not a real safe thing for the buyer !!!!

Have you tried contacting eBay in a situation like this? They do have dispute resolution and this situation would certainly qualify. In this case, if you haven't received answers to your emails and you're uncomfortable with sending money to a third party, report it to eBay under non-performing seller. We have had some disputes that eBay has been very quick to resolve. That seems to be one area that they are very responsive in.

    Hi Susanlynn

Ya I sent a question to ebay through the paying the seller safely catagory ,and asked what to do with this ,I ll wait and see what they say, if I dont get a good response then I will go to dispute resolution,

This is the only time Ive had this sort of thing happen and Im kinda skiddish about such things, I will take a negative rather than a loss ,, at least I can post a follow up if he gives me one .

    Thanks for the info.

    Rick,
You should not have to take a negative or a loss. As long as eBay has been informed of the problem and you are awaiting a response, the seller will have to wait. If he negs you and eBay finds in your favor, they should remove the negative. If the seller does answer any of your emails, save them. Ebay may want to see the correspondence. Good luck :)
