What are some basic tools I could use to make hobo nickels? Stuff that would be easy to find or inexpensive and don't take up too much room. Thanks

Google gravers . Also for holding the coin steady when working on them I've heard a cheap way is a piece of wood with some putty or clay to hold the coin .

If you are just after the product rather than the 'old time' experience, you can use a dremel tool and steel or diamond bits to rough out and then use a graver to give the appearance of 'hand cut'.

If you use actual gravers entirely and are inexperienced with similar tools, but plan to use your hands and fingers in a profession, get a stainless steel mesh glove from a butchers supply. Gravers are very sharp and metal is harder than wood or meat.
