In1992 the Island of Maui instituted a coin program designed to provide funds for the non-profit Maui Chamber of Commerce Foundation:

Maui is the second largest of the Hawaiian Islands and has long been popular with tourists because of its tropical beaches, scenery and authentic native cultural activities.

With the cooperation of the members of the Maui Chamber of Commerce it was decided to create a Trade Dollar that would be accepted at face value toward any purchases made at participating businesses during the year of issue.

To entice tourists to keep the Trade Dollars as souvenirs and encourage numismatists to collect them, it was further decided the dollar would be about the size of a Unitted States silver dollar and carry a design representing Maui's unique wildlife.

The Maui Trade Dollar is composed of Copper-nickel.

This 2006 dollar was designed by Sarah Olsen, an eight-year-old. Her design features a hump back whale, puffer fish and coral. Click here to see it: http://www.joelscoins.com/images/maui06r.jpg

Thanks Clinker, I have one of these that I picked up on our honeymoon in 1997. I picked up the one with two dolphins on it as the dolphin is a significant emblem to a submariner. I pull it out every now and again to remember the great time we had on the beautiful Island of Maui...

I'll post a picture of it when I get home.

    Best Regards,

    Darryl

Darryl, they also have a Hawaiian inscription, whose meaning I don't know. The Maui Trade Dollar tokens look like they are of the same size & composition as the Eisenhower Dollars.Am I right?

You are right, Aiden, but I believe the majority of the non-numismatists who kept one as a souvenir call it "dollar" and you'll find more of them in coin collector's holdings than in token collectors treasure boxes...

Where can I purchase these "Maui Trade Dollars"? Also, have the Trade Dollars been in circulation since 1992? Every year? Thank you.

    Maui ;)

I have seen them on ebay. Just search google and you will find them.

First minted in 1992 the first series of coins where from 1992 to 1996 they were very popular and so the second series came out in 1997 to 2001. Now we have a third series with the 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 and out now are the new 2006's to complete the Third series.

I won a "trade dollar" in an internet auction several months ago. It is a 2002 with humpback whales, birds and the setting/rising sun on the obverseand OneMaui Trade Dollar / The Valley Isle on the reverse. It was only tradeable for one dollar at participating merchants during 2002. A very neat coin / token.
