what is the history of the 82 and 83 mint sets?

A number of years ago, I bought both the 82 and 83 mint sets from an old time collector in my hometown. He never gave me the background of these. I know they were never officially released, so I'm guessing these were just available at the mint gift shops. I have never seen a listing giving me an indication of the value of either of these. I'll keep them forever mainly because of who I got them from, as he has since passed, but I was just curious.

There's a great thread on the subject over at the NGC forums.

The mint made souvenir sets beginning in 1971 or'72. These were sealed packages of 1c to 50c of each coin struck withe a large mint medallion. They were sold in the gift shops that were often only accessable after going on the mint tour but this was not always the case. The '82 and '83 sets were actually available by mail but this was very poorly known so sales were exceedingly weak. There were 400 of the '72 P & D sets reportedly made but other mintages are very elusive and perhaps questrionable. There were reported to be 10,000 of the '82-P, 15,000 '83-P, and 20,000 of each of the Denver issues.

Quality of the souvenir sets is not up to the regular sets and these four are especially poor. The '82-P quarter rarely comes even choice in these sets though there are reports of some gems. Really all these are tough in gem. Coincidentally there are no varieties in any of the regular souvenir sets.

Thanks for the post, and I'll check out the thread. I think that alot of things were poorly marketed by the mint in those years. Thank goodness for the web.
