should every collection have direction?

I think every collection needs a little bit of direction and some randomness.
I have one collection going that has a goal. I'm trying to complete a certified Franklin set in all 65 FBL or 66. But I also have a binder full of random coins that I've picked up since I started collecting that have just caught my eye.

Every time I buy a random coin I am mildly disappointed. For me, sticking with my game-plan makes for good purchases and no regrets.

I only wish I had a few hundred more bucks to buy two coins I have located that adhere to my collection, but that I cant afford. :-(

This thread has been most interesting to me. At first I was a bit confused since, upon reflection, I discovered I didn't have a strategy...at best, I had a loosely defined type strategy. This thread has forced me to clarify my collecting principles (in my own mind). For this I am grateful

My coin collecting principles are as such:
    1) eye appeal trumps all. Age and history are interesting but I want coins that I enjoy eyeballing. "Coin porn" is a fitting term for me.

    2) I collect US coins produced for circulation but only in high grade, mostly by type with an eye toward set completion. I collect US commemoratives. I collect foreign bullion silver coins.

    3) Gold is wonderful and I love it but I tend to go nuts so this PM is dangerous for me...I consider gold to be "the hard stuff" so I will stick with silver. Gold will be my "investment/inflation hedge stash" and since it tends to suck as this, I will no longer be buying gold.......for now....probably....unless I see something really nice.

So there. I now have principles and an emerging strategy. Thanks to all who contributed to this thread!
