An unusual ancient coin to identify

    I was contacted by a man with this coin he found in an old sewing machine!

    I would appreciate help identifying it.

    It looks like a 1st/2nd century AE of Sidon with Europa on a Bull. Not sure which ruler, however. You might find more clues on the Phoenicia, Sidon Wildwinds page.

    Have you seen this coin in hand sir? The only reason I ask is it has some characteristics of older cast copies I own.

    I have not seen it in hand. However, I find the pits unlike casting pits and the I am convinced it is genuinely ancient. I have seen (and own a black cabinet with) a lot of fakes and this one does not remind me of a fake.

    With zubmly's suggestion I found it. It is BMC Greek Phoenicia, Sidon 212, plate XXIII.13, of Nero, struck 58/9 AD. The lettering below Europa on the bull is the word
    "of Sidon" (Sigma I Delta Omega, N O Sigma)
    in Greek, with Theta EA Sigma below that.
