As some of you may know, our now six and a half year old daughter Thalia Elizabeth led me back into coins a bit less than a year ago when we discovered a nice looking 1959-D Lincoln Cent at the bottom of her broken piggy bank. I went out and purchased the Lincoln Memorial folder and a second blank folder for the set, and we began the quest to complete the 1959-2006 set.

Well, now it's 2007 and we received the first cent with that date last Thursday (from a Tim Hortons yet, for you Canadians out there). And on Saturday, fittingly, at the local coin shop that is so good to the kids, I got change back from my purchase of a 2007 ASE and within that was a 1968-S cent. That was the last date that Thalia Elizabeth needed in the first folder, and although there are still a couple of those 1982 varieties to get, and we'll need to find a 2007-D at some point this year, I feel that we've been able to reach a bit of a milestone. And it was all out of pocket change and a bit of roll searching, so it is in fact still possible!

Thalia is certainly happy, and so am I

Glad to see you and your daughter both enjoying the hobby!!! Congrats on the Progress of the Set too...

What do you think will be next for her???

    Nickels, Quarters???

I think any of the silver coins will be harder as I think people pay more attention to them, that and a lot of poeple know pre-64 are 90% Silver than know about wheats and VDBs and S-VDBs...

I know plenty of people who can not tell you who was on the coins before who is currently on them...

Doing a $1/2 coin collection will be a very difficult undertaking,as they are a coin that is seldom seen in circulation in any grade these days. The same thing also applies to the Canadian 50c. coin as well.It seems very odd that they are still being struck today, but they won't circulate like the $1 coins.

The other collections in folders we're working on are:

"Thalia's Wheat Cents" - a year set until 1940 and then all coins / mints past that.

"Thalia's Indian Cents" - just 1880 to 1909. It takes the last page of the second Lincoln Memorial Cent folder.

Canada Small Cents - just need a couple more of those. It's much easier to finish that set than a complete set of Lincolns! Heck, it's actually possible to finish this set! We have a "Unisave" folder for that which is a combination of plastic pages inside a Whitman-like folder.

20th Century Type Set / Birth Year Set - That's actually done except for the 2000 half dollar.

State Quarters - yes, we have a "map" too...

And then, of course, there is the "anything with Queen Elizabeth II" collection :)

The idea here is to stay on the (very) inexpensive side. She is, after all, still only six and a half and although I hope she will stay with the hobby, I can't guarantee that. After all, I'm a bad example in that respect!

Awesome! That is something to complete a set entirely out of pocket change! Way to go!

Thats great!! I love younger people getting involved in the hobby. As a younger person myself, I want someone to share the hobby with in the future.

you should have had her stick with getting stuff from pocket change. it's lots more fun than going to a store and buying stuff. Maybe cheap type coins from a junk box, but it's still the thrill of the hunt.

I myself managed to get an almost complete set of FDR silver dimes from circulation in the 1970s and it was still possible. A complete set of nickels and clad "silver" is possible, if you don't count proofs and the notorious "1982 plain" & 1996-w dimes.

    Good luck.

    You missed my point, EricL.

The last cent needed came in change from a coin store. It's still change. There was no way that the coin store proprietors knew that the 68-S was the last (well, almost) Lincoln Memorial that Thalia needed.
