    Oh, the irony..

You come here slinging around labels such as "fake" and "fraud", yet are that touchy to be offended by a post amounting to nothing more than a simple (and likely correct) observation?

Looks like a PCGS database error to me... The coin, insert, and slab look legit to me. A simple email to PCGS would have gotten it corrected.

I suggested sending an email to PCGS two days ago. See post #16

I know... But it looks like it got brushed off by the OP. I just wanted to put my 2 cents in.

How did these come about? Did PCGS pay John Mercanti to sign them and how much? Why only 28? I would think they would have made many more. How did they enter the market? I'm thinking they made some other signed slabs in the past. Has the value held up on those?

They charged $30 each and in bulk submissions of 15 or more. I suspect more than 28 :)

Ok, here are the stats on the coin # on your label:

    http://www.pcgs.com/pop/pcgsnolookup.aspx?s=516925&p=MS&t=5

And there have only been 29 with the grade of the op coin. However, there are large numbers of the coin ( over 11,000 graded pr70DC) that do not have the label. But notice that a bulk submission by an authorized submitter and fee will get the label. As dealers find the bids going up on the signature, they may resubmit their pr70DC for the label in bulk, and the number will increase correspondingly.

    Gimmick, IMO.

"And there have only been 29 with the grade of the op coin."

When I said this above, I was referring to the 518362. If you go to the url above for 516925 and click on the + in front of the #, a drop down menu will give the minor varieties of which 518362 is one with 29 ( signed). The 516925 was the original coin # you started with.

I suspect the dealer (JJ) decided to send some regular 516925 for grading and then picked out the PR70 and submitted it back for signature insert only and not regrading in case they changed it, or maybe it was cheaper, so PCGS didn't put in a new insert with a different variety number, just the signature insert itself. On grading inserts that can only be submitted by authorized dealers and not collector club members, or regular non-authorized dealers, the population #s are just a selling ruse in my opinion.
