Is this Morgan an MS60?

Someone is selling this on another forum. He's calling it "uncirculated" in his forum post, "Brilliant Uncirculated" in the eBay auction, and selling them at MS60 prices. But they look nicer than MS60 to me.

He is asking $46/ea shipped, or $215 for all five. He has not provided pictures of all five yet.

Regarding the black marks on the coin, he says "They do not have black marks on them like that pic. I have no idea what that mark was or where it came from but it's not on the coin."

As a newbie, I'm being cautious and thinking "red flag", but maybe I'm missing something. What do you think?

    Could it be polished?

The 2 black lines on the obverse are just surface scratches. Since the luster was displaced, it's "shiny" there and acting like a mirror to reflect back a shadow or black shirt.
So they are scratches, but over all the coin looks fine to me. I don't know that $46 is a bargain though....but not bad in my opinion.

    Maybe even a -61.
    -62 anyone?

Lack of wear would make it at least an MS60, lack of eye appeal and all the marks would keep it at MS60.

I agree, I don't see any obvious wear but it does have quite a few dings. As long as those scratches (the one's that show black) aren't too bad, I think MS60 is accurate. If those scratches are bad...it might not grade at all.

Lack of luster suggests that it has been dipped a few too many times.

    To the OP:
I don't recommend that you buy raw coins on SleazeBay, and never, never take the word of a seller you don't know to tell you the truth.

Based on the photo of this coin...I think the luster looks pretty good.

Yeah looks like a low end UNC. $46 isn't bad, we are paying $40 in the shop for them.

Low end unc Morgan IMO ms 60-61 could even go damaged details I'd pay a couple bucks more for a nicer one

So you would buy that one for $40?

If it's UNC.... Yeah we would. Obviously it's hard to be 100% sure from the pics... But it looks to be.

I think the obverse is damaged. The scratches look too deep to cal MS. I would say MS details.

Yeah, I'm gonna pass. I think I can get a much nicer one for the same or slightly more money.

The luster *is* nice. I just wish it didn't have that scratch on the obverse.

(Maybe I'll save up for a nice DMPL :wideyed: )

Smart move, as that doesn't look like a decent coin to me. There are so many nicer examples of that date that go cheaply.

That is a date that just plain comes nice.... And it's cheap. You shouldn't have much trouble finding one that you like.
