I got this about a month ago from a local dealer that I frequent. This one appears to be signed by several St. Louis Cardinals, the one I see that I know is Red Schoendienst. I have been looking for a $1000 note for a while and at $1400 the price was right even with the graffiti. Is this a note that should be graded or is that a waste of time and money? I have found a real love for currency
I think it is worth grading, especially if you can verify the signatures. Not sure what the protocol with the grading companies is on non-Treasury sigs but I'd ask them about it. Might also ask them for a vanity entry on your holder, St. Louis Cardinals related...
I wonder if you could somehow get PCGS to grade/authenticate the note and their PSA/DNA arm to authenticate the signatures. It's all the same company and they do it for sports memorabilia (meaning they will have PSA grade a piece and have DNA authenticate it).
Shouldn't be hard as thats where I live lol. This will be with me for a long time i'm just wondering if its worth authenticating or grading?
Yeah, I gotta agree! You really should have it graded just for your own piece of mind if nothing else.
Definitely get the signatures authenticated before sending it in to be encapsulated. You could then request a special comment regarding the autographs, assuming the signatures are substantiated. Otherwise PCGS/PMG will just assign a Net grade for the writing, which will hurt the value. At $1400, you got a great deal. For the currency purists who don't like autographs, it's not a great sell. But for Cardinals fans and St. Louis folks, you got a really valuable piece, assuming the signatures can be verified. Far more valuable than the $1400 you paid.
I agree. Like I said before. The parent company of PCGS is Collector's Universe who also owns PSA/DNA which is the best signature authentication company when it comes to sports. I'm sure somehow, PCGS and PSA/DNA can work together since they are under the same ownership.
Oh man wouldn't that be nice if they won the series, I could literally buy another $1000 on that profit lol. Anyway thanks for the comments though I'm still a little unsure. A couple of the sigs I can't read will PSA know who they are? Here are a couple better pictures.
I think it's pretty crazy that someone had those players autograph a $1,000 bill. Of course at the time they were probably only worth face value, but still. Usually when you see an autograph on a bill it's cause the person just didn't have any other paper to write on at the moment. Can you imagine someone saying, "Darnit, I only have these $1,000 bills. Could you just put your autograph on here?"
Yeah it was def not something I would do but when I saw it marked at $1900 thru and old schooler dealer I've known for years now I knew I had to make an offer. He said he was in it $1350 and just wanted to move it. I keep trying to find a link to the other sigs but I honestly have no idea when or why it was signed. Here are close ups of the other sigs.
