I have an 1885-cc that is a lock 64+. After looking at the hot 50 guide, I took a look at mine, and sure enough it is a vam-4. It has a doubled dash, die chipping in the cc etc. I have included a very poor close up of the date. I can't find anything as far as pricing history on this. Does anyone have any idea how much one in 64 would be worth?
On heritage 1885 CC vam-4's graded ms65 sold for between 1200 and 1300. My new cherrypicker guide says 1500 for ms65. The MS67's sold for over 5K.
MY opinion... (and I just sold an NGC MS65 1885 CC late last year) I like the Vam 4 dash...... My opinion is..... If I were to buy another 1885CC, I would definatly look for one of the 2 Dash 1885CC VAMS. Probably the VAM 4...... Only problem is the 1885 CC is so pricey as it is there is only a slight premium( if any) for the 2 Dash Vams. There are only 4 known die pairs for the 1885 CC. 2 of those are Dash VAMS.. I personally believe the 2 Dash VAMS are scarcer than the 2 non dash VAMS. But when you are talking an already pricy $1250 or so in MS65, not to many VAM collectors can even afford a non-dash, much less pay a premium for the dash. It is a matter of this coin already costs too much vs MUCH SCARCER so-called common date VAMS. I own several VAMS where less than 100 are known in any condition. There are probably at least thousands or low tens of thousands of the dash 1885 CC, in existence, in VERY HIGH GRADE. I like them, but the rarity of the date in of itself negates a real demand for the VAM.... of course this is just my opinion.....
