Of course that is very disappointing. I find it eevn more disappointing that there was no followup. That dark patina so common on Bactrian and similar coins always has worried me some, since its not that common on Sogdian and kushanshah pieces. I have always worried a little why it seems so common on Bactrian, Kushan, Indo-Scythian, Indo-Parhian, and similar bronzes. I am kind of afraid to soak some of mine in acetone after seeing this one. Hopefully CNG will be following up with the source of such coins, but again they should have at least ackowledged your concerns.
I think you are correct about the black patina as a potential decoy for major defects. Luckily, i also have pitch black bronzes of which i am sure they are 100 % solid. In Silver coins it is usually a bit easier to judge the surfaces from a photo.
Thank all of u guys for ur input. I should receive the coin in the mail in a few days and will post my own pics of the coin and have u all check it out again
THcoins, I've looked into this and sent you an email. With your permission, I'd like to post it in this thread.
As i tried to illustrate in my post; better to judge it when you have the coin in hand. @Ardatirion: Got your mail, sent a reply. No objections to adding it to this thread.
Black is fairly common on silver, (its the natural oxide color). Its more unusual on copper. However, the danger of patina is that is can be hiding something on any coin, be it an ancient or modern, (toning).
