    Anybody else collect holed/pierced coins?

    I'm building a wacky set of holed U.S. type coins that I can obtain
    for under $10. I've gotten just about all of the older types I think
    I'll be able to under these terms, with just one type left. But what
    I'm missing are mostly holed pocket change, specifically these three
    types:

    * Holed Lincoln Memorial cent
    * Holed Jefferson nickel
    * Holed Susan B. Anthony dollar

    My main criterion is that the hole has to have already been there, for
    a purpose such as the coin having been used as jewelry, that the coin
    can't have been holed just to create a holed (damaged) coin for a
    holed coin set. So I don't hole coins myself and ask others not to for
    me.

    If anybody comes across one of the above three coin types that already
    has a hole in it, you can rescue it from its dreary damaged existence
    by elevating it to a collection of similar coins. The coin will feel
    better surrounded by other coins that have gone through what it has
    gone through. <g>

    Has anyone here ever tried to spend a holed coin? What was the result?

    Nope... In 46 years I can NEVER recall getting a holed coin in change. I've shot and holed a few but never spent any. Sorry...

    The only one that I have is a dime that my sister gave me. It's pretty neat.

    I don't have any of the types you're looking for, but I do have a small collection of holed and counterstamped coins.

    I've found several holed halves searching rolls. I haven't found anything else with a hole.

    Who was it that I remember reading about in the past year or two that completely a holed set of Indian head cents? I think he may write for CoinWorld or Numismatic News.

    I've found a couple of holed half dollars like what you might expect - holes near the edge so it could be worn on a chain or something around the neck. I was going to offer them to anyone who wanted them here at Coin Talk. Then I came across three or four Kennedy halves that had been holed off-center at the back of the figure's head (kind of creeped me out) and a couple that had been holed and filled. For what purpose I don't know. And finally one that the date had been deliberately filed off and smoothed over. I should get some pictures. I don't know what to do with the coins.

    From what I understand it was fairly common in the latter part of the 19th century, after coin collecting had caught on, to fill in holes of coins that had previously been used as jewelry. I suspect that has continued to happen to the present day with older and more expensive types. Don't know why someone would fill in the hole of a Kennedy half.

    I don't collect them per-se, but I do own one, in particular.

    This coin was part of my Grandfather's odd coin collection. He died when I was 6, and getting his coins after he passed was how I was first introduced to coin collecting. As you might imagine, this coin means quite a bit to me, and the hole and its use only add to the appeal, in my opinion -- knowing my Grandfather actually imparted much of the wear this coin shows when he used it as a key fob for years makes it even more special.
