Stumbled across this on ebay and thought it was an amusing listing. Too bad the coin looks fake. Read the full description... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Haunted-coi...-S-Coin-/321431812911?&_trksid=p2056016.l4276
There's a long tradition of folks selling "haunted" items on eBay. Whatever. Wonder if you could force a Buyer Protection return, not on the basis that the coin is fake, but that it's not actually haunted?
Haunted = Fake is true, but why coin is an automatic a fake one? So far, the coin seems being poor condition and damaged. It would be great for anyone who want to complete a set that not require higher condition than what showed on ebay listing.
Look at it. With all due respect, even a "poor condition and damaged" genuine chain cent is not, by any stretch of the imagination, an inexpensive purchase, but would be money well spent compared to any amount paid for this.
It's obviously possessed by the spirit of a coin collector who killed himself in a fit of despair when he discovered he had purchased a very poor quality fake chain cent. That's why they hear him crying and moaning. Why else would a very poor quality fake coin be possessed.
The only haunting that's going to happen here is to the buyer. ...who will be forever haunted that he spent several hundred dollars on a fake chain cent.
I would buy it and then go put it in a parking meter, maybe in Brooklyn. Teach that demonic spirit not to mess with coins.
I know nothing about these coins, can someone please explain what makes it a fake? Just looked up some graded ones, also read about the valuable 1800's electrotype copies, but a 5 minute lecture and seeing couple of pics won't make me an expert. Doesn't look like the modern chinese fakes imo. What gives it away?
Work with a trusted and respected coin dealer or auction house and you won't have to worry about this kind of junk !!!!
The hair has been crudely hand engraved. There are three obv dies used on the chain cents. This coin uses a long 7 in the date, none of the the three obvs do. The 3 in the date is large and crude with a very open bottom curl, none of the 1793 chain obverses have a 3 like this and the positioning of the 3 compared to the 9 is wrong for all but one of the dies. The chain cent used 2 rev dies. This piece is based on the second one. The lettering spacing is close but not quite right and the lettering is all rounded and mushy unlike the lettering on the genuine coins.
