Just recently picked up this Severus Alexander. I have been looking for ages to find just the right SA coin for my collection, must have looked at a thousand of them. As you may know by now, portraits are all important to me. I finally found THE definitive SA portrait at a great price. The search is over at last. IMO I wont find a better one...got a nice Maximinus I (thrax) as well (very typical big chin portrait)...will post it when I get good photos...
Very nice! Here's the example I just picked up... Attribution: RIC 105 (RIC IV, Part II), RSC 401 Date: 230 AD Obverse: IMP SEV ALEXAND AVG; laureate head right Reverse: P M TR P VIIII COS III P P; emperor standing right holding spear & globe
That's another amazing addition to your collection Drusus. Here is my denarius, with Severus himself on both sides and a recently purchased sestertius which I posted before. It's a bit larger than a US half dollar and HEAVY! And a die crack to boot.
I love those heavy Sestertius and that one is in great shape, I only have one (pius) and it is in rough condition but it is, like you say, very heavy. I bought it when I was new to collecting, it wasnt until I saw one like it in good shape that I realize he has a beard!!
That's an Abe Lincoln beard too. I was just looking at the pic of my denarius and realized that I have the inscription wrong on the label.I left out the SEV...oh well.
Here's a nice Denarius of his mother Julia Mamaea that I just picked up... Julia Mamaea / Felicitas / Denarius Attribution: RIC 335 (RIC IV, Pt. II) Mint: Rome Date: 322-235 AD Obverse: IVL MAMAEA AVG, draped bust right Reverse: FELICITAS PVBLICA, Felicitas standing left holding caduceus and resting elbow on column Size: 20.1mm Weight: 3.205 grams ...now I just need coins for his Grandmother, Aunt & Cousin
I happened across this Severus Alexander today and just couldn't pass it by... Severus Alexander / Denarius/ RIC 123 Attribution: RIC 123 (RIC IV, Part II), RSC 448 Date: 222-235 AD Obverse: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right Reverse: P M TR P XIII COS III P P Sol advancing left raising hand and holding whip Size: 20mm Weight: 2.98 grams
wow...exceptional...bold clean strike with good relief on both sides...Great typical portrait...nice find.
Might as well add this one to the thread too, it's on it's way to me now... Severus Alexander / Denarius / RIC 250 Attribution: RIC 250 (RIC IV, Part II) Date: 222-235 AD Obverse: IMP ALEXANDER PIVS AVG laureate bust right Reverse: PROVIDENTIA AVG Providence standing front, head turned left, holding corn ears and cornucopiae, modius on ground to left Size: 20mm Weight: 2.6 grams
That's my third one (all my ancients can be seen through the link in my sig). Just picked this one up the other day. No others of him (so far).
