    Greetings,

I was looking for any input you'd offer on this VF-35/XF-40 (I think) 1921 Peace Dollar. There is indeed a light golden hue/tone on the obverse.

    Thanks for looking

I think this coin is a little better than you give it credit for . XF45 / AU50 IMHO. Very nice.

Not sure about the grade Ben but it sure is nice looking :D looks like the beginings of some very nice toning.

Ahh, my favorite coin, I like yours I would have to say it probably grades at 45. I am sure you have noticed the coing looks lots better in person than it does in pics. Did I mention that this is my favorite coin.

Thanks for taking a look guys. Yes SZteve, I've got a picture of it from a few months ago, and tghe tone is much lighter. I've got a better camera lens now as well.

Is it cleaned/dipped? There seems to be a lack of toning or grime that I usually see on circulated coins. Other than that concern, it looks good and probably should be purchased even if cleaned [at an appropriate discount].

Perhaps years ago by a prior owner. I've had it for about 3 years and have never cleaned or dipped it.

I also have a new lighting system, an OTT-LITE.

I'd have to see it in hand, but I'm a 50-53 on this one. Still lustrous, and too much detail for me to go lower than a 50.

I think 35-40 is conservative on this coin. It may have had an old cleaning, but I still like the eye appeal and the strike. I would say it is close to AU 50.

I've got to go with at least a 45 and even if it is an old cleaning it doesn't detract from the coin at all.

I agree with the guys--it has too nice of luster to be lower than AU.
Nice coin Ben---you also need to remember that the detail will look lower in grades on the 21's because of the high relief.

An above average strike, but from the photos the coin appears to me to be an overdipped and/or cleaned AU .

My grade: AU details, cleaned, net XF -- about $100.

    Just MHO and YMMV...Mike

    It's amazing what a difference a pic makes isn't it Bone ;)

If I'm not mistaken this is the 3rd time you've asked this same question about this same coin. And boy what a range of answers you've received. But ya know what, it's educational - I love it :thumb:

Just for the heck of it gang - check out the links, some of you may be surprised - by yourselves ;)

I am one of those surprised by themselves! I called it a vf-25, even with the better pictures.

This coin has a lot of eye apeal, but it no way is a 50. Bone always finds the most beautiful coins no matter the grade.

Here is a picture of mine to compare to. I bought mine as an AU50 from Har-mans coins in Harrisburg, PA.

Thanks for posting the links Doug! That was really though provoking---it sure does show how one coin can look so different in different lighting and photos.
The first set of photos is what really hits home---the lighting seems to not hit the coin at the right places so the luster doesn't show almost at all---it leaves it looking flat--lifeless and maybe dipped a few times.
But then comes along these photos---it shows a nice coin with a good bit of luster---

Ben---what set of photos do you think shows the coin as it is in person the best?

    Speedy
