When you buy a coin or note on eBay, isn't it your goal to pay as little as possible? Why should it be any different when the tables are turned? Given that the condition of this note is pretty bad (Fine or lower) you might be better served if you just make a REASONABLE counteroffer and go from there. Face it! A 9,900% profit or better is still awfully good.

Only greedy people think like that. How much would it be worth if you asked $500 and it never sells?

But he could entertain counteroffers that is above what he was lowballed on and between the maximum. Plain and simple, we all love this hobby and try to further ourselves along as cheap and effective as possible. Therefore it is in many of our interests to get the best price for our piece while still trying to be fair.

First, you don't know that the offer was a lowball.

Second, what is the maximum given its condition?

Sure, there are some eBay listings ranging from $399-$1800 AND NONE OF THEM ARE SELLING even though they are in better condition that this note.

So, in your infinite wisdom, what is a fair offer?

Not greedy, just wanting to know why someone should sell for less than market value just because they got it for face value. If it's worth $X, then I want $X, not matter how much I have into it.

How much do you think its worth?

Do you pay market value for everything you buy? If so, I have some certified Morgans I'd like to sell you.

bryantallard show me the money....so i can look through it

#1-I see what you are saying and I respect it.... but at the same time look at like this please. I go to banks 7 days a week, six different banks and some twice a week getting quarters and ones. I waste the gas and spend 4 to 5 hours to search everything, photograph with the usb microscope then with the camera. then have to enlarge things, then have to protect them and categorize them, and list them and ship them. I waste ALOT of time doing this to find a couple things worth $3.

#2- how do I know he is not deceiving me on its value? after all my time and effort should I let someone take advantage of me?

#3- if he is telling me its worth $100, it could be worth 200-250. why should I settle for 50-75 when I might get $100-150

#4- yes there is BIN for 399.00 but might only be worth $200. so no sale. people asking 1800 for bill...they might have been offered $1000 but turned it down and THEY are the ones being greedy. no sale. because I got it for face regardless of what the highest offer is even if its $20 I WILL sell it. I'm not going to hold out for weeks or months because i make absolutely NOTHING with it on my shelf.

#5- most importantly... chris, in your opinion...what would YOU value it at? or have you at least seen one like this sell? do you think it is worth more than $75?

if you had a certified morgan someone gave you for nothing that you were going to sell how would you do it? auction? or BIN with BO? thanks

Let's leave greedy out of the equation. This situation, this particular note, this is the time to play HARDBALL with a take-it-or-leave-it, no-nonsense approach, the man makes (to my mind) an incredible find, let him profit big-time. If it doesn't sell, list it again and raise the price. The listing fee is negligible. Actually, you'd probably be better off waiting until October, after eBay's summer doldrums. This is not the advice I usually give...;)

A simple question blown all over the place.

cpm9ball, if you listed it on eBay already then politely tell the guy who made you an offer you do not end listings early and let the listing run its course. It will sell for what it does to the highest bidder. That's what it is worth to someone right now. Getting it for face value was a bonus since it was not purchased for resale.

For crying out loud, WHAT DOES IT MATTER if OP lists the bill for "more" than it's worth??? No sale, he re-lists, $25 less.

This is not rocket science. It doesn't sell, it simply means the guy who really WANTS it, didn't SEE it.

Is someone putting a gun to your head? I am guessing not, so you don't "have" to do anything and instead "choose" to "waste" your time (your words, not mine).

Just a crazy thought, but by doing you homework before listing perhaps? As for taking advantage, you're asking $800, so between this and not doing your own homework, please don't speak of taking advantage or play the victim here. You regularly sell on ebay, so you should already know how to play the game.

You shouldn't, but then why are you asking $800? It seems to me that you're all for not having one put over on you, but maybe it's not so bad if you're not on the receiving end.

Then why not just throw it out there in an auction format and let the card fall where they may instead of this....

"highest offer takes at noon on the last day..... if you are out bid I will contact you and let you know so you may counter their offer if you like."

I think his only point was that "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush", but I could be wrong.

Please understand that I don't care what you ask or make on the deal. If it's worth and you can get your asking price, all the power to you, but please... don't squawk about someone possibly trying to take advantage of you, and then basically admit that you believe it's worth nowhere near what you're asking.

And to answer your very specific question of what would a fair offer be.

I would put it on ebay, list it here, and set my price slightly higher than what I really wanted for it or thought it was worth and let people make offers. Highest offer after 30 days gets the bill. I sure wouldnt take some strangers first offer without considering my other options, thats for sure.

All this hand-wringing could have been avoided by using my "eBay's free-appraisal" strategy; go look it up in another thread. List at a very high Hidden Reserve. If it sells, tap-dance. If it doesn't, look at the cluster of highest bids and re-list near the average. Easy. Cheap.

Wanting to get as much for an item as you can is not greedy, it's smart. Why would you want to sell something for less than you could, just because you got it for face value? How dumb is that.

Sorry Chris, I was one post below the first when I looked at who started this thread.

When someone has something for sale and they are not sure of its value auction format is the only way to go. The market will determine, to a point, what it is worth. Hopefully those most interested in the item see it before it ends and bid on it.

I repeat, it is NOT a crisis if it doesn't sell the first time. As eBay has plenty of free listing days and weekends now, the cost factor is immaterial. Strategy is what earns you the best price.
