http://cgi.ebay.com/1892-CC-Morgan-...0QQihZ018QQcategoryZ11979QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem This thread is not meant to ridicule anacs. Cleaned coins can be found in ANY TPG's slabs. I guess this is to show that you should always try to buy the coin and not the holder.
Zane I think I'm seeing it but want to make sure... The REV seems to still have some luster and doesn't while it has that dipped looks still looks alright--now the front of the coin is totaly different.....luster is gone and the coin looks flat. I would say that it was cleaned pretty bad. Is this the same as you picked up on? Speedy
That is what I picked up on. The reverse looks like a 63, but the obverse is just flat and dull like you said. It's always a shame to see a cleaned coin IMO, especially on the scarcer issues.
Zane, As a beginner I am just trying to understand the things that you should notice when you look at the pictures. On the Obverse (Middle Left Picture) the "UNUM" and Stars below it look like there is a shadow to the right. Is this an indication of cleaning (left over toning/aging) or just that - a shadow? The face also looks a little rough. Thanks Darryl
dont the grading companies put "cleaned" on the sticker? Question I have is: I bought an au 58 the other day. not much luster to it. Im not saying its cleaned. is au 58 generally expected to have luster? luster is more a quality of an ms coin, right?
A coin in AU 58 should have significant luster, but show evidence of slight wear on the high points. Often this wear will slightly impair the luster, but a correctly graded AU 58 coin will have significant luster left....Mike
I just cannot see that thing in a 63 holder. The obverse has definitely been cleaned to some extent. The back, however, does looks like it may be alright and uncleaned. I have seen TPGs let a light cleaning slide on key and semi-key date coins and just unofficially net grade the coin, but that would put a coin like this in a 60 holder. That coin just looks awful in a 63 holder!
I was at a large coin show last year in St Charles MO, looking for a 1911-D half eagle. One dealer had a NGC XF45, and I did the standard "you've got to be kidding" thought to myself. If you have to do a double take, its probably been cleaned. I see a lot of AU coins advertised as BU on eBay, the hairlines are the giveaway.
For the record, I see nothing in the photos concrete enough to judge this coin has been cleaned, although a cleaning is something I would certainly be looking for if I were to purchase this coin. To me, the salient point to take away is that you should always make your coin transactions sight-seen transactions or if that's not possible (as with eBay purchases) ensure you have a rock-solid return policy. The second point is that it is imperative that each of us, as collectors, gain the knowlege to be able to tell the difference between a cleaned coin and one that has not been cleaned, and we should trust our own experience/knowledge much more than the 10 second judgement of a grading company...Mike
This one makes one wonder when the double grades will come back, Obv AU58, Rev. Ms63.... Seems along time ago we had this system. (not the numbers though) Just AU/BU or XF/Au stuff like that.
