Another new addition is a rare commodus provincial. I found several with three stars but not 4. Curtis Clay had to give me it's reference. Commodus (177 - 192 A.D.) Æ18 of Philippopolis, Thrace O: AV KOMMODOC ANTONINOC laureate head right. R: FILIPPOPOLEITWN crescent and 4 stars. 18mm 4.5g Varbanov 1006
I dont know what the stars mean, even on my hadrian with 7 stars denarius. But the other commodus provincials I found from here had 3, so the 4 is rarer.
I recall a lot on star coins being written by Michael Molnar but I never put much stock in the arguments and am not a student of astrology. I have no ides of the meaning of the four, three or seven stars. Since the seven requires you to count one as the moon since there were only seven wandering objects known to the ancients, I then have no knowledge of the meaning of the crescent. If someone would like to research all this and explain it clearly, I would be interested in hearing your conclusions.
I own several coins with the stars and the crescent, but I have no idea of the meanings. I, too, would enjoy any insight of the meanings.
Yah sadly, my memory is so bad I can't even recall what I had for breakfast (Clik snausages?) ....... ummm, but I do hazily recall Doug telling me that the 3 stars on this coin were somehow associated with astrology (again, my memory is so poor that it could have been Geology, not Astrology?) ... anyway ... I'm just tryin' to help ... ... again ... => sweet => that's a very cool coin, Mat
cool addition! Maybe 3 stars was the standard design, and the engraver felt it had an empty space and added another I'd be interested to find out what the meaning is as well.
