My First us gold coin. Didn't know these were this tiny....so tiny. Value and grade please. Looks like maybe a jewelry setting damaged the back.
Lighting can make gold look silver.... would be a damaged piece though.. possible AU if no damage. POSSIBLY fake... need slightly better pictures. Just looks like a weak strike.. not 100% right.
There are many counterfeit gold dollars. The denticles don't look right to me and the strike around the date looks stronger then most gold dollars I've seen.
I don't see anything obvious that screams "fake" at me. So, I'm going to assume it's an authentic piece. That said, it has been damaged and it is not gradable. I'd say AU details though. As for value, I see PCGS certified genuine damaged examples selling in the $300 range when looking on eBay at completed listings.
Those pictures are better.. there's always a chance for a fake, but that makes me think it's real, just damaged
Should I send it in even though it will come back with a damaged label? So that buyers won't have a concern about counterfeit...if I decide to let it go down the road.
In my opinion, it isn't worth sending in for grading. As long as you price it fairly, it shouldn't be hard to sell this piece.
this is a type II, look at the S, in STATES, along with all the Es, on the obverse, this is a dead give-away, for a fake
Don't just say it, explain it. OP, Is there any way you could post large and clear obv/rev photos taken outside of the holder?
don't want to go in the attic to get the book, the research is out there, very well known year for fakes
Last picture is as clear as I can get it. (iPhone 4s on tripod) I could pop it out the flip but clarity is good as my camera can get at this time I could try a scan possibly I guess I need to contact the seller and start the refund process...I wish I had solid proof or a reason before I go that route though
Have you weighed it? Have you taken it to a local dealer to have them examine it in hand. There is only so much we can do using average quality photos. How much did you pay for the coin and where did you get it?
I'm into the coin for a total of 300. A little more than I'd like but seemed to be avg for damaged/cleaned type ll's that I compared it to at the time I'll weigh it and check that out. I could swing it by my LCS but they are a good haul away.
heres a good link, I know the lettering on the motto isn't right, now I know the reverse isn't either http://coinsite.com/1854-56-one-dollar-indian-head-type-2/
