Lets post about coins spearing in Post the Movie, the Sceene the coin apeared in and what coins(s) it was... I'll go 1st.. Tombstone- Sceene in the bar at the Poker table, the guy was spinning what looked like a Morgan or maybe a Trade Dollar.... Lets see how many good ones we can come up with... As a bonus, here are a few Coin or PM related Smileys....
Well the first one I thought of was not technically a movie. The famed 1913 V Nickel made an appearance in an episode of Hawaii 5-0.
As I recall it was a CC Morgan that was the centerpiece of an old black and white Perry Mason with Raymond Burr. The plot revolved around a counterfeit deliberately made with the weight a little off-center so that it wouldn't stand on edge.
Twilight Zone episode , forget which one. Starts by showing a small boy with a straw hat going thru his "secret" box. Inside were a 6 Indian heads, some marbles and a few arrowheads. "American Buffalo", a movie I seen about a month back that was all about a rare buffalo nickel that a guy from a pawn shop sold and then found out he sold it way to cheap and decides to steal it back. I'm not sure if they actuually specified what it was i misssed the first 10-15 minutes. Dustin Hoffman was in it. CSI episode about a guy getting murdered over some rare coins. Had a few mentioned but focused on the 09-s vdb and 16-d. I think the csi guy traded the vdb for the merc. Days of our Lives (soap opera) (Please don't ask how I know this!) John Black carries around a Morgan in his pocket for good luck, they've showed it quite a few times over the last month (so I'm told!) Haven't been able to pick the date out yet. The movie "Sahara" (Good Flick by the way!) Has the famed confederate 1/2 dollar in it. In fact the main plot of the movie is centered around this coin. I won't give away the ending, but now I know where they all went! Rent it if you haven't seen it. All about a rare coin and lots of explosions too! Just about every Clint Eastwood western shows some old money of some sort, usually at the card table, the bar or being handed over to the lady upstairs. "Session 9"about these guys cleaning out an old mental hospital or something like that and one finds a whole wall full of morgans, a pile up to his knees and 4 feet across. he keeps it secret from the other guys, tries stealing it, but then the ghosts come and spoil everything for him and eventually everyone. Cheap scare flick but it does have a whole bunch of silver in it. David Caruso's in it. Mattman
the most overlooked scene This is very obscure, and its a quick shot, so you have to be paying attention to catch it. The movie "Chain reaction" starring Morgan Freeman. There's a scene in the second half of the movie where a CIA guy is evacuating an underground facility that is going to blow up. The guy opens a briefcase. theres a quick camera shot of the inside of the briefcase: theres coin-collecting stuff in there!! I see old paper currency. I see cardboard coin holders. And whatever else is in there.
The new Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, when the grandfather hands Charlie a dollar to get a candybar, it is a CC Morgan Dollar. The funny thing is he could have gotten big bucks from a coin dealer instead of a candybar. Just something I remembered seeing. This thread is really interestin. Going to need to see some of these films. Phoenix
This is not a film but I was watching a documentary over the weekend about the building of the ship the Queen Mary 2. They showed this event and the two coins on the show. The ship was built in France. July 4, 2002: QM2 Keel Laid On Cunard Birthday 162 years ago to the day the first Cunarder, BRITANNIA, sailed from Liverpool for North America inaugurating a transatlantic dynasty, the keel of the new giant QUEEN MARY 2 was laid in a special shipyard ceremony. In what officially signals the start of construction on the 150,000 gt liner, workers and invited guests watched the traditional laying of two coins within the keel. A new British five pound Jubilee coin and a one hundred Franc coin were placed inside a portion of keel number 502 as it was lowered into the dry dock at the French yard of Chantiers de L'Atlantique, in St Nazaire. I believe the tradition is an offering to Poseidon and is supposed to bring good luck. Darryl
Smullen - I know the last post doesn't quite fit but I think it is in the spirit of your thread. I don't think it would stand alone as it's own thread. Hope you don't mind. Darryl
You guys didnt mention one of the easiest ones to remember: the movie ghost. A loft apartment in an old warehouse. They break down a wall to expand the apartment. In the dusty room they find an indian-head penny in a glass jar. ...this one might not count though. A character says "hey look, an indian penny." I dont remember if we actually SEE the indian head penny.
I think there was another Cold Case type program about a coin collection in the past being robbed and there was at the end a lady in the crime lab holding up a 1943 Copper Cent that was the lst coin recovered. She gave it to the lady that was either his wife, girlfriend or something.
I posted some pictures of coins used in old movies on a website at: http://home.earthlink.net/~brianrxm/stuff/mobk_aa.htm The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941) The Good Earth (1937) The Maltese Falcon (1941) The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948) Until 1960, the US Treasury department would not allow films to show real money, either US or foreign.
I liked that movie. It was filmed at the old Danvers State Mental hospital which has been closed down for years and not too far from where I live. I had to watch that film for a college psychology class. I remember seeing the morgans and getting excited! They have the hospital fenced off and chained up,. but i'd love to take a peek in there with a metal detector
Another current movie "The Good Shepherd" You see a silver certificate $1 bill used to decode something in the beginning of the movie I remember the barber dime in "titanic" as well Also, the 1932 version of "scarface" features the sidekick flipping a 1878 Morgan Dollar around
