Jim M, there's a photo of a Jefferson nickle in The Minting Varieties and Errors guide that shows the same characteristics as your coin. At first it was thought that the nickle was some type of minting variety, but as it turned out the coin had been resting at the bottom of a sewer. The acids in the sewage had caused the damage.
