No Gallus has headgear. The Caesar was always bare headed.

Julian is the closest guess so far but still wrong.

We have a winner! IMHO Procopius was not a usurper but was killed because he had a stronger claim to the throne than Valentinian and Valens since he was related to Julian (why I said that was the closest guess). Your turn, zumbly!

The Julian II tip gave it away.

This'll probably be too easy for some :

tricky...yes. I have many coins which would convince me the bust was that of C2 or Constans..... Gallus was the closest fit, but I didnt go for him, because as you say...no headgear. nice one Doug.

    Afraid not. Clue time?

He wasn't Roman by birth, but he became a Roman citizen.
His son was a cousin of the emperor Claudius.

Oh well ... I still have 205 guesses remaining (see ya tomorrow, my coin-friend)

Uhmmm.. maybe more than 205. Sorry, perhaps my first clue should have been "he's not a ruler of the Roman Empire"

    Anyway, new clue...

Plutarch wrote that he was "one of the most gifted rulers of his time."
The land he ruled over was south of Hispania.
