I don't have a clue about coins but I have a 2005 nickel with a bison on the back. On the front There is like a bubble coming out of the mouth with FSP imprinted in it and on the back there is a porcupine lying on the ground where the bison is leaning over it. Can anyone tell me exactly what this is?
Someone took a regular nickel and then played with it by putting those images on the coin. This is considered post-mint damage and does not increase the value of the coin.
The FSP stands for "Free State Project" and was an effort to get people to relocate to New Hampshire. If you Google "Free State Project" you'll get information about this effort. I don't know what the porcupine stands for. As far as I know all were struck on Jefferson Nickels. I think many thousands were struck because they show up on eBay all the time. I have a few examples in my collection and they do carry a small premium over face, but not much. Nice find! Bruce
I don't understand why PMD like this would sell for ANY PREMIUM AT ALL. Are people really that stupid? Chris
Yup, people are that stupid, even the ones that collect Civil War and earlier counterstruck coins and Hobo Nickels.
Yeah, the FSP coins will become very valuable when New Hampshire secedes from the Union, becomes a part of China and allows Jinghuashei to set up his counterfeiting operations in Nashua. Chris
Some people will just pay the small premium for what the stamp represents, because it's different, they like it, or any number of other reasons. It has nothing to do with stupidity or even future value. I have a couple of examples that will still be worth almost nothing in ten years, but to me it represents a bit of history. I suppose you could call it a political statement by the people behind the effort. Just an interesting piece Chris and nothing more. Bruce
Thank you everyone who replied. I also have a 1946 half dollar. It is Booker T Washington on the front and on back says from slave cabin to hall of fame. Anything on that?
The free state project is nearing its goal of 20,000 signers. The porcupine is the symbol of the project. Chosen for its representation as a peaceful animal that can defend itself. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
