This is a fine saying, but in practice, it does not mean much unless the person to whom we're telling this knows what they're doing. Both the "plastic holder" and "little green sticker" can be valuable tools and should not be so easily dismissed. I would hope so...
I agree. Slabs and CAC stickers can be valuable tools and they create liquidity. Personally, I almost never buy raw coins online because you can never get a good look at them in photos. I know with a slabbed coin, there is built in insurance that an impartial expert has viewed the coin. Slabbed coins are also safe for the novice collector as they help prevent getting burned. I always advocate for education...but slabbed coins do add significant protection in this hobby.
I would pass on that one. Here are 2 other 66s that, in my mind, are better prices for the grade. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1880-S-1-Mo...26?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item4d1c9fff52 http://www.ebay.com/itm/1880-S-1-Mo...92?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item3ce127cc04 If you just HAVE TO HAVE that green beanie, then I would send an offer of $400 on this 1 and see if they accept it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1880-S-Morg...49?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item2a3ad95129 This is just a quick 5 minute search on Ebay, I didn't even bother looking at all of the other venues.(because I'm not in the position to be buying right now.)
Thanks, but I was only interested in this coin because of the nice cameo look. And I can rarely buy coins on eBay, as very few sellers ship to Canada. I'm not actually looking for this specific coin right now, this one just caught my eye.
I agree with the others. While it is a pretty coin, it is an 1880s. That is one of the most strictly graded dates in the Morgan series, along with 1881s, and 1882s. There are many fine examples and superb strikes during the course of those there years. TPGs are very tough on that date, and I don't think it is a high in grade 66 to me. Had it been a "guess the grade" contest, I would have come in with 65+ and no green bean. While it is a nice coin, if you are concerned with value, I would look for a more dazzling 66 of that date. I would buy this one before I got the one you posted--the surfaces are cleaner. I also think it is a better buy: http://www.davidlawrence.com/inventory/viewitem.cfm/inventory/406244/inm/1880-S-$1-PCGS-MS66/snm/Morgan-Dollars/gnm/Silver-Dollars PCGS price guide goes $365 for a MS 66 1880s. So, that should give you an idea--I have seen many for low $300s.
