I decided to sell some coins from my collection that aren't part of the major focus areas.

That said. I decided to go ahead and sell this Colorized 2001 Silver Kangaroo Dollar. I've had it for a while but the frustrating thing about this early series of Kangaroo Colored coins is the spot toning on them. I've read that this was caused by tongs or clamps that were used in the painting process. The spot toning is copper in color. I've rubbed a spot on the rim a little and it's silver beneath toning. These coins coins were, evidently, the first that the Royal Australian Mint legal tender coins allowed to be painted or 'altered' before sale. I believe Downies had something to do with this limited edition as well?

Has anybody had experience with this spotting/ toning issue on the earlier series Kangaroos?

    Thanks for your help!

I have to ask, is the colorization on that coin from the mint or is it aftermarket?

The mint worked with Downies to have these coins colorized. They were advertised as "hand painted" but were sent to Germany for the painting process to be completed before the coin's release. They started this in 2000 which was the first in the series of the 3 Aboriginal designed Kangaroos. Their processes for colorization has MUCH improved in the subsequent years and is now evidently done In-House. The color centering on these coins was a little off-center but they still have a strong following, especially "down under"

    Oy vey!

I really wish the "colorized" commemorative-coin fad would just go away.

Sorry if some of you here are fans of them, but dang, this ugly mother hubbard is Exhibit #1 in the case against colorized silver commems!

Instead, give me a strong graphic design (either minimal or elaborate) with contrasting frosted/unfrosted proof devices and fields. I know this sounds old-fashioned, but classic (and just downright "class") beats chintzy any day!

I'm with you on that. I purchased this coin when I saw a few close at over $400.00 a couple of years ago.

The irony is, this coin is actually pretty nice in its more common, natural state. Pic below not mine:
