Thinking of getting this 10 Decimos graded. Not because it's that rare or nice but I really like it. Any ideas if NGC or PCGS will list it as "Off-Center" on the holder? Not a loaded quested by the way, just curious if those grading agencies will recognize varieties on 19th Century Latin American coins. Thanks again! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I was just wondering ( I don't know) if it would be considered unusual if it was struck without a collar or just typical uncentered planchet? Especially if their mint issued grog rations.
This same coin came up for auction about a year ago and I wasn't the winning bidder. It came back up recently and the winning bidder didn't pay so I was given second chance and picked it up for $102.00. It sold for a bit more than that last year. It's not the nicest strike but I rarely see these for sell... I would like to build a set of them. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Thanks Derick & Mat. Also very nice is the 20 Decimos Copper from the same series and I've seen some very nice examples if both. Very interesting coinage... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
The 10 and 20 decimos of this type are often off-center. Very nice obverse detail on this coin, now that is not common.
It almost looks like it was struck on a larger planchet... Possibly a 20??? Have you weighed it to see if it is the proper weight?
According to NGC, weight varies from 12-15g. I have not weighed it. Good point though, I will make it a point to do so this week. http://www.ngccoin.com/price-guide/...-decimos-km-4-1827-1830-cuid-12791-duid-43519 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
10 and 20 planchet sizes overlap, 10 decimos up to 32mm, 20 decimos 31mm and up. If weight below 16g, it's 10, if 16 or higher, it's 20.
I greatly appreciate that info. I am having it weighed today and will post the results. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
From memory, this particular coinage was actually overstruck over an older coinage. I have been looking for one with a nice clear overstruck feature but found it to be either out of my price range or in really poor condition. Only reason why I knew this is because of my interest in overstruck coins. I do not specialize in this coinage but hope that someone can share more information about this.
Ok I weighed this piece and the verdict is in... It's struck on a 10 Decimos planchet. It weighs 14.6g give or take a few 0.1g (I was at the mercy of the postal scale in my office)... You had my interest piqued though that this might have been struck on a 20 decimos planchet... Oh well, back to the drawing board Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
