I've never owned a 1921 Peace Dollar but came across this one that looks like an VF/XF from the bad pictures, was wondering if any Peace Dollar collects think this coin is fake. Yes the pictures are bad but they just listed it as a buy it now for $50 shipped. Took a shot at it. Even if it's ugly I figure I can resell it for more than $50.
Never hold a coin in that way. If you have to hold the coin, hold it by its edge. You'll need to post better pictures to get an opinion on your coin.
After the seller handled it that way, I'd stay away. Fingerprints damage a coin and its numismatic value.
Yep, you should buy circulated coins only if they've always been spent by people wearing gloves. Those are terrible photos, but between the $50 price tag and Buyer Protection, it was probably worth snagging. If it's harshly cleaned, though, I'm not sure how much upside potential it has.
The obverse concerns me. Better hope the seller has a return policy. Then again I bet you can have it your way once you ask ebay nicely.
Two things--first, as was said, the coin is being mishandled. NEVER touch touch the engraved surfaces of a coin--it is to be held by the rim only if at all. Second, that coin has been harshly cleaned--it has a dull, lusterless evidence of being cleaned. Definitely not a desirable coin.
I think the main problem with the obverse photo is that it's over-sharpened. The fingers and background look weird in the same way that the coin does.
Yes, sir; and only if they'll put it in writing. If worried about a counterfeit, I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. However, and if wrong I apologize, I get the feeling that your interest comes not from wanting to add this to your collection, so with that said, circ problem 21 Peace are dime-a-dozen material that often sells for more than they should be worth. It is possible that you could make something off of it, so if you want to roll the dice for an at most modest return, give it a shot, but I am not seeing a likely score here.
Chin line looks too long, which in turn makes the neck look longer and narrower. Junction between neck and chin form the number "7". On my 21 it's more of a right angle.
Here is one I know is real..bought in the early 80's. I is cleaned (I cleaned it with brasso) and it is real. Not sure if worth $50 Its a gamble but there were only 1 million of them.
Actually, even high VF coins should have some luster remaining in protected areas, like right up against the stars, between the letters, etc. Here's a VF35 of mine. Look not only where the rainbow toning is, but also in the crevices of the ear and hair curls as well as the eagle feathers.
