The odds of your finding someone with either of those half dollars who WANTS a 20c piece are virtually nil. Every time I hear somebody wasting time engineering a big trade, I think of the little boy who traded his $100,000 puppy for two $50,000 kitties. Sell the 20c piece and sit back and wait for YOUR choice of scarce Canadian halves, not someone else's choice. And because it's a thin market, you might get lucky.

That's just an opinion. The Coin Police aren't going to knock on your door and dismantle your trade.

I'm not understanding the point of this... Why wouldn't you just list with no reserve? Wouldn't whatever it sells for be your "free appraisal?" Why pay for 2 auctions (have to pay fees for reserves, etc), then end up listing it for about what your bids were anyways?

Because some people are concerned that a "good" item will sell way too cheap. And if your listing contains a bad photo or misinformation or ends at 2pm on a Tuesday, then an obscure item may very well sell too cheap. Particularly true for something not in the standard catalogs. Remember you only have one chance to do it right. There was a good example right here on CT, but I don't want to embarrass the owner. The point is not whether an item will sell, it's all about not leaving money on the table.

I'll watch for another good example this week.
