I found this German (?) medal recently and I am stumped. The reverse has three coats of arms. It looks like Prussia, Russia and maybe Switzerland. I thought maybe an anti-Napoleanic alliance, but I don't remember the Swiss being involved. Appreciate any help.
That is very strange. The top crest looks like the german coat of arms, bottom left looks like the russian one, and the right does like swiss. Im not sure what this is but im intrested and hope someone can help you out!
My guess would be Austro-Prussian War, the cross representing the Kingdom of Italy, Emmanuel II being one of the many Belligerents.
Italy is right; I think the medal has something to do with the Triple Alliance. This German article about the alliance (Dreibund) also shows a medal with the same three coats of arms ... (By the way, the bars of a Swiss cross would usually not go to the very edge of a shield.) Christian
Looks like a representation of Germania on the obverse - woman with sword and what looks to be the german crest on the shield. Odd that there is no date. I was going to guess maybe a shooting festival medal, but that doesn't seem to fit the style of the coin now that I have read everyone's posts. I will check my books and see if I can find anything. Love a mystery.
So it looks like the two headed eagle is the Austro-Hungarian shield, not the Russian eagle. Very interesting. Thanks
Interesting piece. The left side is The Watch on The Rhine, which was a Franco-Prussian War era symbol and the other side must be WWI before Italy changed sides in 1915.
Here is essentially same figure: http://www.ebay.com/itm/German-made...rass-Token-Germania-With-Shield-/301427094890
By the way, this is probably the painting that the Germania side of that model was designed after. See the top right image here: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lorenz_Clasen Christian
Am not fond of it, but it represents the bellicist zeitgeist back then pretty well. Father Rhine and the German countries had to be "defended" ... Christian
