Did you know the soon-to-be-released Presidential One Dollar ($1) coins will have incused edge lettering? Take a look: http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/$1coin/index.cfm?action=EdgeIncused Hope you enjoyed this trivia.... Clinker
Clinker, these will be the first U.S. coins to actually have the date on the edge of the coin instead of being placed on either the obverse or reverse of the coin. Aidan.
You're right...and that;s why I thought everyone should know that....as-well-as blind people being able to feel the edge and know whuich coin threy're holding... Clinker
I'm interested to see the packaging the mint uses for these new dollars. They say the packaging will be raised so that you can read the incused lettering. I would guess they will be like the packaging or sealing process on some of the most recent commemorative sets, i.e. some of the coin and currency sets.
Check out the Mint's website in the "Upcoming Products" link and you will see a depiction of the coins in the new holder. Here is a link (I hope it works!): http://catalog.usmint.gov/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?langId=-1&storeId=10001&catalogId=10001&identifier=9100 - Jake
I can guess that those slabbers will have a very hard time designing slabs to allow the edges of the coins to be read. What do you think? Anyone else agree with me on this? Aidan.
Wow.... 1st I've saw of that.... Thanks for the heads up.... The coins look pretty nice, but the package looks kinda cheesey.... Reminds me of the Nickel sets...
Yup, I'm with ya.... Wonder if they'll just stick'em in a regular slab like a Sac.... Or if they'll really make something else just for this series... You'll really want to see the edges as thats the ""3rd Side" where the Mint Mark is....
new presidential $1 coin does it make sense to have more $1 coins? the cost to minte them; the lack of use. dont people complain about aout $1 coins: being bulky, inconvenient, and the dumb-sh---s who think they're quarters or not real, when they make change at the store. PLUS: I say all this because the biggest place where they are hugely useful, the post-office stamp machines, will no longer have stamp machines. the post-office is compaining the stamp vending machines cost too much to fix, and they require too much maintenance. The $1 Sac---(dont know how to spell it) coins used to come out as change from the stamp machines, which I thought was a good idea.
I read its cheaper for them to make the Dollar coins than the bill and they can circulate longer... Also, with inflation, I see vending machines with Drinks and foodm Items to starting to take the dollar within a year or so... Public transportation around here already accepts and give Dollar Coins... Really, the only Negative I see to them is that ""Strippers" might get PO'ed if you try to slip a few in their garter belt.... Its gotta be embarassing for them to come rollin out as they twirl around the stage pole...
I didn't know that the mintmarks will also be placed on the edge along with the date.I had assumed that the mintmark would be placed in the field of either the obverse or the reverse, which is where you normally find the mintmarks on a coin.I know that the British Royal Mint uses a slanted cross mintmark, but it only appears on the edge of the British 1 & 2 Pound coins.Perhaps the U.S. Mints are taking a page out of the Royal Mint's book,as it were. What do you think? Aidan.
I would expect strippers to be big supporters of the dollar coins - they could have the bartenders give change in $2 bills and double their income.
My concern too... I'm all for the Edge lettering... I think its great, but I'd rather the mintmark be on the Reverse or Obverse... Just MHO.... This is really the only thing I don't like about the series, other than its metal/finish... We need a new Silver Dollar to be proud of.... Hmmmm, Could be...
Hmm, you may have a point... This could be bad... This could effect my finances and ability to buy coins... Could "Stripper Tips" be a TAx deduction/Charity??? OK sorry back on topic....
U.S. Silver Eagle. Smullen, the U.S. does have a silver $1 coin - the Silver Eagle, which is denominated $1 & indicated on the reverse. Aidan.
Umm, not exactly... You can't get them at a bank or any financial institution... I'm not going to say, you can't spend one, but not many people would want to want to spend 15+ to buy one only to turn around and use it in place of a buck... They aren't ment to be spent or Circulated, but more as a collecters item and a store of silver(PMs)... Maybe I shoulda worded that different, we need a Silver Dollar coin made to spend....
Smullen,in other words, the Silver Eagle is like the Canadian silver $5 Maple Leaf - a bullion medal-coin. Aidan.
